First Egg Of The Season - - Anyone Else Get One?

Just pulled the first 6 i set and they were not fertile, got 6 more to check in a few days and 11 to set still, might get lucky yet but if not i am still learning alot about their laying behavior and how to find their nest, so next year i will be ready once it starts again.
My Master P is starting to drop his train but i knew that was fixen to happen cause his feather shafts just to white. i will be glad when this is over i hate to see him morping into the bubble neck peacock, looks so painfull , he twist his head with his eyes closed as it swells... poor Master

Sorry to hear that. I'm thinking mine won't be fertile either.

Congrats FBC! Are they from the Taupe hen or just the Taupe pen?

I set 11 peahen eggs under a broody chicken a few days ago! I always use permanent marker on my hatching eggs and get great results. Pencil eventually smudges off the eggs and that is never good.

Blue Creek Farm,,,actually I've had a grand total of 6 eggs so far from the Taupes( waiting for avalanche to come when you read I've only incubated 2 so far) One egg was laid from my BSSP hen named Pipi,I watched her lay it then grabbed it and marked accordingly with my pencil. I use a magic marker as the season progresses to make a diffrent kind of mark on each group of eggs I put inside the bator, easier to keep them straight that way and I've seen no diffrence on hatch rates from using a marker vs a pencil.I actually have 3 eggs from the Taupe pen incubating but I'm sure the first one that was laid won't be any good.
Kuntrygirl,,,MAY 26TH will be the first Pea Palace Merlot hatch-a-long,,,wheres my dandelion vino stash???

I will try to keep calm! I am just guessing that you did not incubate those extra eggs because you will send them to me?

Well you better start incubating those eggs and keep us updated with their progress! But do not forget, if your incubators are full, I always have broody hens available to throw some eggs under... Have some more hope for that first egg because I sure hope it hatches! Did you ever get Violettas?

Violettas are on my list,,but when I get them I need to have another pen ready and the cash. Maybe for my birthday this month I'll treat myself. I bought a humidaire incubator a few weeks ago and from my calculations comparing egg tray sizes next to my Brinsea this one will hold no less than 200 eggs.In the height of egg laying season I could get 39 eggs every other day.If I keep my 4 remaining 2011 birds thats 3 more hens but they really need a new home as I don't need them.Still in two weeks time this bigger bator can be overloaded which I hope the case will be.

Here is egg number two, it's the first egg from hen number 2, Spot. Too bad it had no shell, 'cause it was fertile!

I have 15 eggs in the bator and all are fertile

Means I will have chicks for sale soon!!

My Charcoal pair started laying today. In that pen is the pied that has been laying and now the split to charcoal hen is laying but they are both laying same day

Now I have to seperate a hen before dark to be sure who's egg is who's. The pied was laying on the odd days but changed when the weather got cold and she stooped laying for 4 days. When she started back up it was even days LOL!
