First snow today; Chickens going crazy.

We had our first snow 2 days ago. My 4 month old chicks wouldnt come out of their coop for the first time. They all just stood in the doorway. They didnt come out for 48 hours! I finally lured them out by spreading 2 bales of hay all over the snow and put some objects out for them to climb up on...,buckets, planters......along with some PVC square pieces...and then I also threw some black oil sunflower seeds around on the objects for them. This did the trick. They spent a few hours out today.

Our chickens didn't mind the tons of snow we got last winter. At times when I went out to feed them they would disappear into the snow as they came out to greet me. Then HOP! They would jump forward only to disappear in the snow again. It seemed to snow all the time, so I got used to seeing them all with a dusting of white. Frosted chickens LOL.

I bought Cochins because they are supposedly hardy. They are such wimps tho when it comes to walking on the snow!!!!!!!! They will not even go off of the hay now.

lol! I keep trying to encourage the girls to come out but no dice. We will see how bored they are willing to get before braving the elements.

Mine did spend most of the afternoon out today but they wouldnt set foot on the snow...they only walked on the hay. They'd have three times as much room if they made trails in the snow. I suppose I could put 2 more bales of hay out to spread over the entire area...but once it snows, then I have to put 4 more bales out!! I'm not spending $16 every time it snows as that can be every 2-3 days. lol

My girls - 1 who was drinking , enjoying their first taste of ole man winter... We obviously didn't get much snow. Lol. It's soooooo cold here though.

I couldn't believe it! She was in the yard following my son around. :) She stayed out for about 40 minutes and she played in the COLD dirt under the coop as well. I think I scared them all out for a good minute when I put down some more pine shavings. They have been getting restless though. It was good for them to get out in the fresh air, even though it only got up to 26 today.
