First Time Egg Candler Scared!

Well if its during day 1-18 you should be able to candle all you want. But during lockdown the baby chicks are getting into position and if you move the egg, then they have to keep repositioning and with the time and energy this takes up your hatch rate could go down. This is just what I think. Amy am I right?
Good point Cole well I really don't candle as a norm during lock down only after day 23 will I do that . I do 7 14 18 like you should and try not to open more than that. I have fixed ways to add water without opening my incubator .only thing I will open for Is to release heat when they spike as quick as I can .I think that's the # one reason for bad hatches in Styrofoam incubators.so I try to watch it real close. it's hard with work you really need to watch it 24/7. but look at you your an old pro now when ar you going to hatch again

I don't understand if you hand turn your eggs then your in your incubator 4/5/6 times a day. then how can it hurt to go in one time to candle with a auto turner ? if you want to. If the theory is humidity loss and you run a dry incubation like I do there again how can it hurt. I think as long as there no piped eggs and your not holding the top up like forever. lift the top grab one eggs put it down candle and replace the egg. In all the research I've done on this subject I've never found anything to say you can't what I have found repeated time and time again is not to let the egg cool off.
You don't have to worry about humidity the first 18 days, and cooldown doesn't hurt them. But the skeptics will say that the handling will compromise the eggs. I've also heard the light will "stress" them out. I myself believe that if you are washing your hands and handling gently that there is no reason you should be afraid to candle. But like everything else the old notions of "killing the eggs" have been blown out of proportion in my opinion. I will agree that the less you handle the eggs and mess with the bator, that, yes, the less chance something will happen. But I see it all as the adage I use with getting in a car. The less you get in a car the less chance you have of having an accident. I'm not going to be scared to live, so I will do it my way and take what precautions I can and let nature and God controll the rest.

Pretty close. You can hinder them getting into position. I don't know about repostioning though. I don't usually candle between locking down and hatch. Even I respect the fact they need quiet time and I don't want to help cause malepositioned chicks. I wait until Most of my eggs have hatched and no pips are showing, then I will take a look to see if it looks like anything else is going to happen or if the hatch is probablydone.

I just saw one of my eggs rocking. Woo hoo! No pipping yet though. Day 21.
Yay!

I believe temp spikes/inconsistant temps and high humidity are the top reasons that people have so many failed hatches in the styros. I have only had one failed hatch and that was my first hatch and I can't even blame the bator. I bought a new thermometer and never checked it. Found out when all was said and done that the new thermometer was SIX degrees off reading warmer than it actually was. I learned the hard way to never trust a thermometer. I was also using the 50-60% humidity that was recommended so I may not have had a good hatch even if the thermometer was right.

I'm a bit late in saying this and catching up with this thread....but I just read that coleson is only 13!!! I remember reading that he had to go to school, but I thought it was college!! I'm blown away at what a great job you did with that assisted hatch at 13 years old!!! And you write and speak with such maturity!! Wow, you have really, really impressed me! I hope that my boys that are 7 & 9, grow up to be as responsible, caring, and smart as you!!! Great job, buddy!! :)

I can't believe it I can hear peeping. Don't laugh, I went to get my stethoscope to make sure, that fan is really loud. But I have heard it 3 times now. I have an appointment at 1200. Thank goodness so I will have to pry myself away for a few hours.

LOL. You're not the first to use a stethoscope. I wanted to use ours, but I haven't found it since we moved last August. I know it's in one of the boxes in a closet...or storage room....lol I thought about trying my son's play one and see if that does anything..lol
