So when I said update in the am I meant east coast time. :)

Meet our very first hatch! Her name is Amy. :)

And three more piped.
Just got caught up with the thread after the weekend. Congrats! I hope you have a lot more today. Be careful naming it Amy. It will try to get out of the incubator on it's own so it can watch youtube videos of chicks chirping

4:21 am AND WE HAVE A BABY CHICK!!!! AHHH SO EXCITING!!

Congrats! Isn't it amazing!

So cool! Send pics when they are taken to the brooder, please!

Any more babies? When you move them to the brooder please send pics.

I have one more this morning and 3 or more piped. I hope they all make it out today.

When it cherps it kind of sounds like "YouTube" and I was wondering why. XD

So the chucks hatching is driving my humidity up to 89 or so. The first one is still not fluffy. Probably because of the humidity. It looks good otherwise. Should I try to bring it down or is it ok?

With a box, you definitely want something so that the moisture doesn't leak through. I use a big clear plastic tote for the first couple of weeks, with puppy pads and pine shavings. I can't remember whether its ducks or chicks, or both, cedar shavings are not good. Poisonous, if I remember correctly. Newspaper can also be slick and hard for them to walk on, unless you mean shredded newspaper. I'd put newspaper under pine shavings if that's what I had. I have also just read about Sweet PDZ, it was originally for horse stalls, but supposedly helps with ammonia odor and is safe for chicks too. I just added some to my brooder and coop, but don't have any first-hand knowledge of its effectiveness. But there are several threads on here about it. It never got too bad with my first 2 chicks plus turkey, but 10 chicks has begun to smell in just one week, so I just added this stuff over the weekend. http://www.sweetpdz.com/chick.html

make that 6!!!

Wow! Going great! Congrats!

I opened it to wipe off the little window and put the thermometer back where I could see it. Humidity is back down in the 70's.

At least 4 more piped that I could see with a quick scan. Many of them have been turned over so I can't see if they are or did have a pip.

The cool thing to me is that the egg I had the biggest question about on day 18 already hatched and it's doing great. I don't know how it only took up 50%-60% of the egg, but came out totally normal. I candled it a day before it piped and it still had a big open pocket on the pointy end besides the nice air cell.

This is the egg that hatched out fine. I marked it after this pic was taken on day 18.
