First Time Egg Candler Scared!

I set them on Friday, April 24th around noon. Yes they are silkie!! So cute!

I set mine on April 22 at 9pm. They hatched yesterday! Silkies too! I bet yours hatch today! Any pips yet? Also my eggs did not move around at all before hatching. I also didnt hear any chirping before there was a whole in the shell and I could see the beak. I also had the eggs on the shelving liner. Good luck! Post pics after they hatch!

1 - There's no telling when it will happen. Best guess is from now to sometime within the next 3 days.... sorry, 21 days is the guideline, but it can run a couple days before to a couple days after and still be perfectly normal. Too many conditions come into play to be able to pinpoint.
2 - 60 is ok, but I prefer mine a little higher - 65-70. How difficult is it for you to adjust? I mean, if its easy to add a squirt of water and it doesn't skyrocket, then you could do it, but if its a huge problem, you are probably safe at 60. You don't want it to drop much below that though.


They need the vent holes open for oxygen, so leave those open.


Yep, that's normal. My guess about wiggling is what kind of surface your egg is laying on. I lay mine on a rubber shelf liner and the bottom of the bator has grids, so I think both those things keep the egg more stable and still. I do see wiggling when they really get at it, but the majority of the time they appear really still.

Questions are fine, and don't be scared. You can do this!

There is absolutely no way to be able to figure out when you'll see any action. 65% humidity is acceptable, but I would be careful opening the bator at that level. I prefer 75% (because I do open the bator open the bator during hatch.) I very seldom see movement from my eggs prior to people. I know people talk about seeing their eggs rocking and rolling....apparently the ones I get are not that active cause I can count on one hand how many eggs I have seen move before the pip.

I candled my last egg today after I took the chicks out to put them in the brooder. I filled up pans of hot steamy water and placed them around the incubator and turned the heat up before opening it. I'm not sure how to explain what I saw. The air cell was not round at all. It peaked and then went all the way down the egg. I'll post some pics. I can't seem to get more then one pic up in a post. I have a gut feeling the last egg is dead. Should I float test? It just looked so wrong when I candled.

Before the chick internally pips the air cell is "drawn down". Some more dramactically than others. I always recommend giving any unhatched eggs 24 hours after the last chick hatched and then candle for internal pips and movement. (Float testing if desired.) If there is no sign of life in the egg, then you decide wether you want to do the eggtopsies, (recommended to start eggtopsies in the air cell,) or if you want to give it more time to be sure. I do my eggtopsies 24 hours after the last hatcher if no signs of life. For me, I don't want to drag out the innevitable.

That egg is a clear. No development at all or early death. Time to give this one a rest.

2 questions
1) It is the early morning of day 20, is I set eggs around noon when should I see pips? I dont see any
2) The humidity is at 60ish, is this ok? I was at 70

I'm also thinking quitter.... sorry. Especially if that is fluid above the chick, up to your pencil line. If that's empty space up there, then I'd float it to be sure... JMO

Yes, it looks empty. I will float and eggtopsie and post pics so I can find out what went wrong, it was alive & moving when i started lockdown. Thanks guys!
