Speaking of bettas, Charles Carroll doesn’t look too well. He’s kind of acting like he has bloat but I haven’t been feeding him a whole lot. We have hard water but I put Betta conditioner in it. Any ideas? (Sorry for the bad picture)

He looks kinda like my old betta! Unfortunately mine had those symptoms before he passed. I couldnt figure out what or why. We tried conditioner, and ran tests on the water, we bough betta water/fish water that was good for them. Fed him peas as that is suppose to help fish it always helped our other fish and saved many of them. But after awhile he just gave up.
The hard water is so hard on them though.
Hopefully that isnt the case for Charles Carroll.

How long did your fish live? I’ve only had him for five months - got him at the pet store on this last Mardi Gras.

Looks parameter-related to me. Have you done any water testing recently? It could also be affected by stress, making the problem worse.

Thank you for the suggestion! I haven’t tested the water because I change it weekly but I’m going to get some testing strips tomorrow. I’m also going to try putting him in a larger tank with a filter and seeing if that makes him happier.

Anyone else here keep saltwater? :D

This is my royal gramma in front of a few soft corals. Sorry for the poor quality iPhone photography, but it's super hard to take good pictures of saltwater fish because of the blue lighting.
I would love to have saltwater fish but they’re so expensive!

Awesome!!! There was someone on here who did saltwater but I forget who unfortunately.

It's important to do weekly testing. If you're changing out all the water weekly, that means that nitrifying bacteria won't have time to develop, resulting in high ammonia. That could be your problem. Putting him in a bigger tank will certainly help with stress, and it'll also keep water parameters more stable. I recommend a 10 gallon, but a 5 gallon should also work just fine.
