So again is the yellow legs a bad thing ?? Is it normal to have them turn to a white color with age ?? If it is a okay thing then why do some have yellow at hatch and others don't ?? Should the yellow legs be culls ??

Tammy, Barred Rocks resemble Cuckoos. I am wondering if you have both? I did receive some Cuckoos on my very first egg purchase that all started out as white legs. I sold them at about 8-10 weeks to a person, telling them that the eggs were lighter and I could not guarantee them. Sold them cheaply as well. The buyer sent me a picture a while later. One of the roos legs turned to yellow! I don't know enough about this, but she and I agreed they were white when they left my farm.

There are several sites that discuss feather color. Bev Davis has a site with every color imaginable. She is a prominent breeder who has done a beautiful job creating beautiful birds of so many colors.

The french Marans site, the Marans Chicken Club, the Marans Breeders of America all have excellent sources of info.

Good luck!

Harp, yellow legs are not called for in the proposed Marans standard. I would cull (sell) any Cuckoos that have yellow legs. And I hope a Cuckoo person with more experience will answer your question. The only thing I can think is that Barred Rocks got mixed in the Cuckoo gene pool at some point. I mean the gene pool of the birds that have yellow legs.

I wondered about the BR theory myself...hmmm...none of the birds have that defined barring like a BR. I do have one that has larger white bars than the black bars and it gives him a lighter appearance but his legs are white.

Thanks for the help. I'll check out the other sites as well.

Yellow legs would be a definate reason to cull those birds. They more than likely have had Barred rock added to the line at some point in time to increase egg production. If Marans are ever admitted and have a standard set yellow legs would be a disqualification.

I went and looked this morning at our Cuckoos that are at various stages of development. They are NOT yellow legged. We just took 2 pics of 2 different age groups:

And here again is a picture of the main roo in the pen:

These birds came directly from Iona, neither her nor us raise Barred Rocks. None of our Cuckoos have yellow legs. I would say they have a yellow tinge under the brooder light. But as you can see from the pictures done have what I would call yellow legs. We have sold alot of these eggs over the last 2 years - is there anyone out there who has hatched eggs from us and have gotten yellow legs? We have never gotten any other reports from people saying that have hatched our eggs and have gotten yellow legs. Iona has been selling this line of Cuckoos for over 9 years - has anyone bought eggs from her and hatched out any yellow legs? We have sold alot of eggs on Ebay and have never gotten any reports of yellow legs coming out of their hatch. Please feel free to read our feedback on there. Trust me if any of them had hatched out yellow legs they would have let us know about it and left it some where in 1 of the feedbacks.

Just looking back thru some old post on BYC and I found this:

Hey - just an endorsement here -

I hatched a bunch of Cuckoo Marans from sandspoultry last fall and they are *great* birds [I got a great hatch]!

I have had several batches of cuckoo marans I've hatched from different sellers and each set is subtly different [one set was beautiful but insane for example].

The Cuckoo Marans I got from sandspoultry are *beautiful* - very high quality, and they also have very, very good temperaments. They are very calm, sweet, docile birds - one of my favorite little pullets came from this batch. She's so sweet & tame that she's like a little puppy that I carry around. ALL of them from this batch are just so gentle and sweet, roos included.

They are also big birds that grew quickly - the extra roos are going to be very nice meat birds.

Anyway, there are tons of folks selling cuckoo marans out there right now but the quality can vary widely - THESE are quality birds. Buy with confidence.

sands--if you havent done so the best thing to do would be to contact Iona immediately and see if anyone else has had this experience with her stock line. The white skin gene is dominate over the yellow. It would be an accurate statement to say some lines had other birds mixed in for various reasons...egg color..production...type and something could pop up with a recessive gene. Now it would seem odd that it would happen with all four chicks from this hatch or from her birds in general b/c one would think the line would be far removed from it, but it HAS and an answer that benefits all parties needs to be found. The Cuckoos displaying the yellow skin should not be used for breeding purposes.

It is not the brooder light i can take some pics outside today if you would like. The rest of them don't have yellow legs.

So I guess you are calling me a liar ???

Steve wanted me to post the pics so I did, he should have just left it alone when I asked about it not bring it to this level.

I too read that statement, that is why I bought the eggs.

Hopefully somebody else will post on here as well. Maybe they are just afraid of the treatment they will receive, if they do !! as you can see I have gotten the Royal Treatment when I asked. A lot of people don't like that so that would keep their mouths shut.

Also alot of people don't know that to be wrong as I would not have until calling a few Marans breeders, so it maybe they really never thought anything about it ??

I never wanted any of this to go where it did. All I wanted to know is this normal ?? Steve even stated last night that is normal you guys get them with yellow legs as well and they change colors latter on, now you are going to say they don't ??

maybe I just happened to get the bad 4 eggs out of all of your thousands ???

Harp you really are a newbie and it shows. The legs will turn white as they age.... and since you are complaining you didn't even say the eye color was wrong... Adult Marans have red eyes, omg just wait, the eye color will change and the legs will whiten. it will be like sands magic. LOL smile

Have a nice day
