Harp, check your blog you have cuckoos from another source.... show them to

They are in there. Will do in the morning.

If this was not a big surprise and you are so sure they will turn white , then why when I asked you about it you said you are a liar if you say they have yellow legs ??? You could have just said they will turn white when they get older ??? I'll have to make a few phone calls to check in to this. Why would some have to change from yellow to white and others are already white ??? Can you explain ?? Never heard of this before, but this is my VERY first year with Marans. Hopefully somebody can explain ??

In short, no she isn't. They must lay a 4 or darker reliably for the greater part of their laying cycle. Like you said, ask Bev

I have asked the "big" breeders and they all say the same thing... the shell color lightens as the laying cycle goes on. Cuckoo's are not the darkest layer as many people know. There are many many factors in the breeding and management of Marans yes? Feed, time of laying. weather just to name a few have a major effect on shell color. Our birds have poor shell color in the winter, but they are still Marans, much better in the spring. and still Marans.... maybe they are 1/2 year Marans? Should we sell the eggs like that? 5 and 6's 50 a dozen.... on the offtime 3 and 4 10 a dozen. how are your eggs doing? do you have pics best and worst?

I don't raise or sell straight Marans, but i'm happy to say my Ray Valentine culls consistently lay darker than that at three years old.

My birds are not the ones in question though, and I do not claim that they are anything other than culls.

Of course shell colour lightens during the laying cycle, but that is a cop out when they are that light, as is blaming the weather!! Marans should be bred for consistency of egg colour. This link might help clear up some misconceptions:

Have you ever heard of different breeds? omg such an experienced poultry person such as yourself should know this? Don't you know that turkeys can change eye color as well... you must have known this from the "ranch" You don't need to make phone calls, there is plenty of experience here? or try the Yahoo Marans groups? as as breeder of 83 birds I would think you would be there learning... well unless you know it already? You know enough to call somebody "out" or do you?

I never said I'm a breeder of 83 Marans birds ??? I have hatched out over 130 so far this year, but I bought every one of them. Yes i do have a lot of them but I feel I need this many to pick out a good breeding stock to start from. I have all the rest that I will not be keeping sold to my daughters 4H group and to a few others that are interested in them after I go through and pick my choices out of them.

I was never calling anybody out on anything. All I ask was why 4 of your cuckoos had yellow legs ?? Out of all that I have hatched so far this year those are the only 4 I have seen with yellow legs, so it brought on my question to you. Then you started this whole thread here. and asked me to post pics of the birds, so I did.

I know nothing of Marans. Nothing at all. I'm learning about them here on BYC, that is actually why I first joined here. I didn't even know they had a turkey section when I first joined. I joined to learn and hopefully get good breeding stock worthy Marans from here.

sorry to disagree but Valentine birds are not ranked very high on the breeder list. And once again show pics of your eggs against an egg chart with a dated newspaper as background. Everybody says.... my eggs are darker but no pics? show them with an April newspaper, June, November.
I will start another thread with just that heading.... who wants to play that game? Lets see "what you got"

I'd be intrigued to see a copy of this 'breeder list'. If by 'breeder list' you mean your opinion, my feelings won't be hurt. If 'low ranked' culls are laying better than your breeding stock, it might be worth reviewing your breeding program.
