Thanks Krys,

For the record Iona had Cuckoo's long before hatcheries did and the eggs pictured weren't the first layed. The person in question is new to marans. I question any pic of eggs unless they are beside a egg color chart, there are to many ways to change a pic. but you can't change the chart beside the eggs. The Fitch line is great, she is breeding some with the feathers back in. we have some that do have feathering and others clean. we are going to breed two flocks, feathered and non. I think the original clean legged Fitch are worth saving, don't you?

HUH ??? Well I have 83 different marans on the ground right now and I have no others with yellow legs ??? Only these 4 from you. The others from you don't have yellow legs ??

I never said I was an expert on Marans, but others have assured me that this is not a good thing.

Harp, show me a pic of 83 Marans.... your cam is working fine

And if you notice the eye color isn't the red iris you see in all the Marans pics. it starts yellow/green and changes to red as they mature. Harp missed that, the wrong eye color. I didn't think it was possible myself but they do about the 4 -6 month point.... wonder how they do that? Harp can tell us to be sure.

The first varieties of Ameraucanas I bred were Blacks & Blues and the chicks had legs that were partially slate and partially pink, with the slate spreading and darkening as they aged.
When I got Wheatens and Blue Wheatens, I panicked when they were born with pink/orange legs that started changing to willow (which is a DQ for Ameraucanas). However, other breeders said, Wait--They will likely keep changing and will be fine. And gratefully that is what happened, and they ended up with the required nice slate legs.
Here's hoping your young ones' leg color turns out fine.

Yes they did and the thread is correct. The pics taken were flashed at close range, that lightens the color. Do you have pics of your eggs? and how the picture was taken? please do share and I'll buy some eggs from you and take pics and post them here? I can make them look darker or lighter the only true pic is of the eggs pictured beside a color chart yes? Would you like to try that test?

The shell color of the eggs has nothing to do with leg color of the birds? Marans lay differnet shell colors thru the laying cycle- if a hen lays a 4 and then lightens to a 3 is she still a Marans? Ask Bev, or Ron Or Wade? or is she only a Marans for the 4 and then what a ????? for the later eggs?

In short, no she isn't. They must lay a 4 or darker reliably for the greater part of their laying cycle. Like you said, ask Bev

I have asked the "big" breeders and they all say the same thing... the shell color lightens as the laying cycle goes on. Cuckoo's are not the darkest layer as many people know. There are many many factors in the breeding and management of Marans yes? Feed, time of laying. weather just to name a few have a major effect on shell color. Our birds have poor shell color in the winter, but they are still Marans, much better in the spring. and still Marans.... maybe they are 1/2 year Marans? Should we sell the eggs like that? 5 and 6's 50 a dozen.... on the offtime 3 and 4 10 a dozen. how are your eggs doing? do you have pics best and worst?
