Saddina just gave an example of the point I was going to make. Obesity often has an underlying medical cause. Injuries, depression, heredity, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to weight.

Here in Washington everyone on SSI gets $674. There is SSD and SSA also. SSA and SSD are paid in by someone.
Well, I can speak for SSDI (Social Security Disability Income), at least in Maine and New Hampshire. When I was diagnosed I was eligible for x amount per month specifically based on what I had earned throughout my life up until the point when I became ill. My entire income history was calculated to come up to x amount. I'm in NH. My mother on the other hand, tried to apply for SSDI for her bad back and was refused because she's never worked. They told her she hasn't put enough "quarters" in (the measurement they use to calculate how long you've worked), so she was denied. She lives in Maine. That's pretty much my extent of knowledge on it.
Me too Washington only....but my son is on SSI and my mom was before it turned to a widows pention and they got the same amount every year. I would be interested in knowing if each state has different qualifications for SSI. I know the amount paid is different in states but I thought everyone on SSI and SSDI got the same amount?
This gets into a really gray area for me. You're fat, *perhaps* because you overeat or don't exercise, so why should you get benefits? But now we could really run with it. You have cancer because you smoked, or chose to work in a factory, you're in a wheelchair because you weren't wearing your seatbelt in that car accident, etc, etc. Is the point whether someone is at fault for being disabled, or whether they, regardless of cause, are still in fact disabled?
Depends on the disability.

Laziness(unmotivated) and over eating can be some side effects of depression though.

Well I know my aunt and uncle both receive SSDI and their amounts are different than what I receive, and different from each other for that matter. Not sure...
I DO remember the lady in the SS office telling me over and over, "This isn't a handout, you are getting what you already paid in to the system for all the years you worked". I was crying because I felt like a loser for being ill. She repeatedly told me what I was receiving was specifically based on what I made over the many years I worked my butt off.

That is true but I have seen a lot of skinny people who are lazy as well. I'm just saying it would be difficult to sort out overweight people based on appearance. There are no definative tests for some of the conditions which cause obesity.
