Florida woman in "sheer terror" of duck??

Okay, first of all the lady is Black. I'm not in the least bit racist, but the black people in this area are afraid of just about every animal!

Second of all, I LOVE the wild muscovies that live here! The worse I have ever seen a male do is hiss when someone gets too close. The females are as sweet as can be and just love coming up to people to show off their babies and get treats. One mama duck use to come and actually knock on my back door when she had new babies. She knew we would give her treats.

I don't think thats the whole story. Someone must have done something to antagonize the duck.

People are so ignorant.

BTW, becuase muscovies reproduce so rapidly and are so hardy but are not a native specied, wildlife control frequently does come out and round up as many as they can and relocate them. I asked one of the officers one time where they take them but he refused to answer which led me to be suspicious of the poor animal's fate.

I know, that's sad. I wonder if they've ever tried to adopt them out to responsible duck owners who will keep them confined. There needs to be a "friends of Muscovies" society in Florida (if there isn't any already). We have a "friends of cats" society that takes in all cats and cares for them until they're either adopted or die of natural causes.

I would be totally sad if they took away any of my Muscovy friends.

I heard somewhere else that even mallards are being restricted in Florida and have to be confined or prevented from flying away at all times.

I saw a show on feral domestic birds in Florida. They have task forces in Miami and other areas, who do nothing but catch chicken and ducks all day long. They bring them to licensed isolation camps where they will be quarantined for 30 days to assure they are healthy. After that they get slaughtered and shipped off to homeless kitchens. Ironically they think that the health rate is 100%, but laws require this isolation for 30 days or they could not offer them as food to shelters. Babies will be shipped off to farms that either raise them for meat/eggs, or sell them to the public. They say they catch so many in Florida that it would be too costly to destroy them and dump into land fills. At least they provide food for homeless shelters with the animals they catch.

Ok, this made me laugh.

They're discussing these ducks like they're rabid wild dogs or something.

The only way they're going to be seriously injured is if they fall running like idiots from a duck.

I have an aggressive drake and he can bite you on the leg, but seriously, it's a minor pinch.

Goodness.

Where i live in Florida they have pest control companies come and remove the muscovys from the apartment complexes. I can certainly tell you they don't end up at a farm but in a bag. The real issue is they perch on vehicles, poop on sidewalks, and loiter on porches where their droppings get them into trouble.

I love your pics! You should send them to abc and tell them how rediculous they are for making the duck out to be that way, as if he caused some major injuries or something. I'd love to sick my chihuahua on that lady lol

BTW I have an aggressive duck myself (sometimes he is nice so I still love him), he chases everyone and bites, plays tug of war with your skin and, alot of times, won't let go without having to pry his mouth open, my worst injuries look like i got a big ol' hickey. Really, did someone file the duck's bill into a dagger so it could "sink" it into people?...haha
maybe it was screaming "I Keel You" like Achmed the terrorist, now that might be scary.

One thing I noticed, in the video, is that the ducks were way over by a fence and seemed to be out of the way. Maybe the day the woman was attacked, they were closer to where people are. But, if they're out of the way, then I think it would be good to leave them alone if they started to get aggressive and not make a big deal if they do.

thanks i have a ton more other sweet pics with him. there is no way ducks can break skin like a cat bite!!!

i still think they were provoked like desertdarlene said, they were off by the fence minding their own business. if they were aggressive like the idiot lady said then they would have attacked the reporter too

I know that's a fact...they're not going to make a believer out of me. I worked as a wildlife rehabillitator and have handled everything birdy from tiny wrens to great horned owls, swans and red tailed hawks, even had a great horned perch on my arm, so this drama queen sounds just plain quackers to me. This truly sounds more to me like someone who is phobic of birds, and there are many people like that. Ducks don't have teeth and they aren't raptors, so this drama gets a big raspberry from me.
