Well, my drake has taken to trying to take a bite of my behind (good luck getting that little bill around THAT) when I bend down to weed the garden so I'm a little paranoid about that...

I have gotten plenty of Butt-nips myself so I know where you are coming from. Funny how they can get right up the back of your shirt too! I always keep an eye out behind when bending to tend to things around my crazy duck.

I just want stand up and say yes, it's a stupid fluff story, but it has nothing to do with RACE. Making this a race issue is racist. The Reporter is white, the woman who was interviewed is black, please try to see them both as people, not steriotypes.

Hmmmm...I wish someone would tell Charlie, one of my muscovy drakes, that he is supposed to be nice and docile. He is mean and temperamental. He has attacked me many times. Once with a claw that sunk pretty deep into my leg and took forever to heal. Usually he just uses his wings and bill. When he bites, he does so very hard, and then twists his bill and pulls at the same time. Yes, he has drawn blood. I have tried many times to put him in his place using various methods as recommended on here. It works for a couple days, then he is right back at it. We "should" just cull him, but I do love him and don't want to do that. He is currently in a pen by himself and is behaving a bit better. It helps that I don't have to go into his pen anymore. I have his food and water right by the door so I can reach in and get it. I really don't know what to do with him other than the time out pen, which looks like it is now his home. I also need to mention that Charlie was raised as an only duckling after his mother and siblings got killed by a predator. We found him in the ditch by our house. My father-in-law saw the incident so we knew that Charlie was an orphan and we barely got to him in time. I didn't know much about ducks at the time. I did try to get a buddy for him and was unable to. I raised him with a stuffed buddy. When he was young, he was tame and fine. As soon as he hit sexual maturity, he became an entirely new duck and turned on us. He has been like that since.

Anyway, the point is, yes, some muscovy drakes can be mean and tempermental and attack and hurt people. I think it is few and far between. I have another drake that is just kind of tempermental. I have a third drake that is very sweet. The fourth one is young, so far he is nice too and respectful. LOL

so this drama queen sounds just plain quackers to me.

i gotta say... this is the funniest thing i've read in a while.

to be fair, my rabid and wild maniac little duck, Puddles (dum dum DUM = scary music) gave me the "beak' this morning for not hopping-to fast enough for her.. apparently the service is very bad here and she was mad she had to wait.

What happens if this aggressive drake attacks a toddler? It is easy to be dismissive of others' complaints about animals that we like. There should be a provision for rounding up and dealing with aggressive feral animals. There are cities that have considered fowl bans because of the abandoned pets left in parks, etc.

And it should be illegal to feed any wild or feral animal.

i don't know about your area but as far as i know, EVERY place i've gone to it is illegal to feed any wild/feral animals! squirrels and wild bird populations included! we are a allowed to have feeders out but when it becomes a nuisance in a particular area they can make you remove any feeders for 'population safety'.

more people need to be aware that they should NEVER approach an animal that is not on someones private property and/or the owner is not around to observe for issues. you never know how that animal would react to you or other people. i let an animal come to me if it wants to but i still look for behaviors as it approaches if it is not one of my own animals or from someone i know.

i'm going to assume that this lady thought the duck was cute and attempted to walk over and check it out when it 'attacked' her. now if it was a goose or swan i could imagine it being MUCH worse for her since those can do some damage to skin! ouch!
