I'm new here. (This is my first post) and I've been reading about DE for a while here on BYC. Decided to google it myself. I put in "food grade Diatomaceous Earth MSDS sheet" and fount this: http://www.diatomitecanada.com/fossil-shell-flour-diatomaceous-earth.htm
I
am very very leary of chemicals of any kind as teaching chemical elimination is what I do for a living. As far as I can tell at this point, I would use this product.

Welcome to the forum. What kinds and how many chicks do you have?

Hi, We have two Rhode Island Reds, Two Astralorps and two Barred Rock. They are only three weeks old and we are in the process of building their coop right now. Very soon they will be too big for their Plastic bin brooder.

DE is good for killing bugs. it does that by cutting them up with the sharp edges left from grinding diatoms into pieces. It is very, very bad for you if you inhale it. Think Freddy Krueger in your lungs. It can also cut the surface of your eyeball if you get it in there. be careful also, when it gets wet it compacts and doesn't work as well or at all and needs to be reapplied which means you have to stick your head in the bag again.

FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth is no different than any other mineral dust, e.g. road dust. What you say only applies to the non food grade stuff.

Agreed.

You wouldn't want to breath in a bunch of dust if you can avoid it either, would you?

No, and that is why I do not fling DE gaily all over the place like some folks

-- but neither do I get all hysterical about avoiding unpaved roads, worrying about the cars/trucks that not infrequently drop off onto the gravel berm of the road that runs by our house and kick up a cloud of dust, riding a horse in a ring on a dry summer day, or things like that

A *bit* of it isn't going to hurt ya.

JMHO,

Pat

Hi, I'm new to this chicken stuff and was very unsure about the DE issue but just saw in my Organic Gardening magazine that they recommend using DE! I trust them and feel they have done the research, so I'm going to use it when we get the ladies out in the coop!
