Yea, same thing here. If there are 10 people that live on a street in our area, 8 of those 10 people have backyard chickens. Having chickens is soooooo common in my area.

Yep. I am a witness to the lower priced eggs. I live in South Louisiana and everyone here has backyard chickens, so farm fresh eggs aren't "as" popular here as they are in other areas. Some people sell their eggs for $1.00 per dozen in my area. I only sell my eggs for $1.50 per dozen. My organic customers will willingly give me $3.00 - $4.00 per dozen. They pay $5.00 - $6.00 per dozen in the store for organic eggs. I wish that I could get a higher price but it won't happen in my area.

I wish I lived somewhere to get organic food at a reasonable price. My eggs are $3.00 a doz.(non organic) and I'm still in the hole.Couldn't do it for $1.50.Do you make money at $1.50?

I live in a rural area, with chronic high unemployment. The local economy here simply won't support those prices. Period.
Big Box grocery stores sell eggs for $1.38 a dozen. The budget watchers buy there and I don't blame them. Every Tom, Dick and Harry already give their eggs away here at $1.50 a dozen. Since there's no profit in doing that, I wonder why they bother, but they do.

I have good customers who like my organic quality. Even so, my $2.50 is the glass ceiling here. I am grateful to get that.

Ok, I had to get off of the floor on that one. Sorry to say that I DO NOT make any money. If this was a business, I would have gone broke a long time ago.

I have other animals and other eggs that I sell, so it's not too bad. I sell my duck eggs for $5.00 a dozen. I sell my turkey eggs for $3.00 PER EGG and my girls lay year round. I sell my goose eggs for $5.00 PER EGG. I sell my extra roosters for $10.0 per rooster. I sold about 40 roosters in the last 12 months. My feed is only $5.00 for a 50lb bag. I get feed from a local feed mill and I buy about 1,500 lbs every couple of months. My feed bill is not too bad. So it's not too bad. I love having chickens and going to the nesting boxes to collect eggs. It's a hobby that I enjoy doing. I honestly don't think that selling eggs is a money making business unless you have hundreds of chickens that lay a LOT of eggs.

Fred's Hens :

Big Box grocery stores sell eggs for $1.38 a dozen.

Our grocery stores sell eggs for $0.99 per dozen. How many people do you think are jumping on that price?

$5 a dozen all day long here in Santa Cruz, Ca., In fact, folks are amazed my prices are so low. At the farmers market a dozen cost $10 and are gone in the first hour. Of course, a 50 lb. sack of layer pellet costs me $15 so there you go. I am considering raising prices to $6 0r $7. Natural, but not organic eggs.

Its not the eggs - 'tis the proximity to people who have $5 to pay for a dozen eggs.
Find them, and the prices will follow.

The other thing about Santa Cruz, One is lucky to find a barely liveable shack in a dark valley for less than $400 grand. Land and house prices are silly here. Commodity prices reflect living prices here.

DEMOGRAPHICS...watch for the designer hand bags. Anybody willing to pay over 100 bucks for a purse should be willing to pay 5 bucks or more for a dozen eggs. You got vera bradly? You got a buyer
