Oh man -you guys crack me up! I am not looking forward to the first time my son sees his pal Roo jump one of his hens. I better explain it to him before it happens. I can see it now...........

"MOM MOM! Go help jenny! Roos trying to kill her!"

hey my 6 year old is running around now mimmicking the rooster's shagging action yelling out that hes doing the rooster dance! This is NOT good...problem is its really funny and when i tell him not to do that its hard not to laugh!

My wife and son and I sat there in stunned silence after witnessing our rooster pecking a hen to get her to fall off the roost, then grab the hen by the neck, jump aboard and well there is no nice way to say this...he was shagging like his life depended on it! The whole thing took about 10-15 seconds, maybe a little longer. Sheesh when he was finished I got him his smoking jacket and pipe!

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I don't allow my roo's to do the "wild thang" in my presence. I am the dominate roo in the flock. If I see the act coming on I knock them off the hen. I scold the roo and then pick up the hen to console her. But in his eyes it looks as if I'm the boss and what he did is a no-no! He has to stay on his rung in the hierarchy ladder.
I have 3 roo's and it usually turns into a roo-gang-bang, for the hen if I'm not around to stop it.
As for the actual act....I was 14 years old before I figured out what the roo was actually doing. As a child, I thought he was giving her babies through his beak and putting them in her neck!!!!!!!!!! After all... that's what my mom said "he's giving her babies" She also described it as "oh, the roo is just planting a seed" HUH?

It is a wonder I ever figured it out!!!!!!!

i have 2 roos and about 20+ hens so the hens will be ok if i just let nature take its course im sure...if the roos actually harm the hens then i will separate them or intervene, but i dont see any benefit really to discouraging the roosters from doing what their natural animal instincts are telling them to do. It seems to me that they are only trying to mate the hens who seems closest to laying which i find interesting. I wonder if the hens are giving off some sort of pheromone which tells the rooster she is ready to begin making baby chicks.

I see the young roosters paying attention to the ones whose combs are reddening and that I also know are about to lay. Sometimes, I just let them tell me whose going to be the next to lay. It's almost foolproof.
