well on my way to pick my dad up from the airport today my phone rang.... now I knew the number but couldn't figure out who it was so I answered it.... it was Ab's, the teenager we weren't able to help out last year and who's been in a residential since... she was calling me because she got a weekend pass to go visit her great grandma who was in a nursing home by us and since she was close and thinking of us she called. Surprisingly enough, I was just turning down the road where the nursing home was a within seconds was staring at her through the chainlink fence much to her surprise.
Kiddo has grown in the last 6 months!!! She got about 4" taller and slimmed down to almost nothing! If it wasn't for her eyes and freckled smiley face I wouldn't have recognized her!! Kid is taller than me now sheesh! I think she just about tried to crush me in a big bear hug.
I apologized several times that we couldn't have kept her at the house, we weren't equipped to help her like she needed and she forgave us. She admitted that she's made a lot of bad decisions and in the last six months in lockup it's really opened her eyes. She told me that once the agency finds a home who'll take her she can leave the lockup facility. I knew the hint when i heard it....
You have no idea how badly I wanted to tell her I will have an opening Tuesday and come back but in all reality I already gave her up once.
I really don't know if 6 months is enough to change someone, but I figure I can find a foster home nearby that I know to help her out... and maybe I could steal her on weekends sometimes?
Anyways, going to meet up with her tomorrow with my wife so we all can visit. She really is a sweetheart who never deserved her biological parents, and what was done to her is what ultimately what gave her the trust issues.
