this morning I went outside to check on my chickens and noticed one was dead under the coop. When I pulled it out I noticed that it’s head was missing, but there were no other signs of damage to the chicken. I inspected the coop and there weren’t any holes or anything. The only thing I can think that may have gotten it was a hawk,l because there is about a 2 square foot section that isn’t covered on the top. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or have any ideas?

Raccoons are notorious for pulling off the head and eating out the crop and leaving the dead chicken. If there is a section uncovered then a raccoon could have gotten in easily.

I luckily haven't had to deal with predators yet but from what I've heard it sounds a bit like a raccoon perhaps, they grab and tear at parts of the chicken and can be somewhat wasteful. I also believe a hawk would have carried it off. Sorry for your loss! ;-;

Raccoons are evil predators. The worst thing is that it will be back! Probably won't finish the dead chick, but will execute another one. Can you put up an electric fence?

18 month speckled Sussex can't seem to walk today and kind of just flops to side. She will eat turkey , worms or grapes but not crumbles and giving electrolytes. Seems alert , no sinus discharge, crop does feel full and squishy . So we massaged crop and gave a little olive oil. Poop is like pure water and odorous. She seems to like massages. Anybody have any ideas. She is moulting.
