Hi Everyone,

I usually only post in the Chicken forum, but I am hoping someone here can help me with a pigeon question.

Tonight on my way home from work I spotted a pigeon jogging down the street with a drooping wing. It could not fly, so caught it and brought it home. It has bands on both legs, one that has numbers on it and the other is just a colored plastic band.

Is there any way to contact the owner from the numbers on the band? I would like to see if I can get this bird home. It looks like a racing pigeon to my inexperienced eyes. Very healthy except for the bum wing.

I was able to contact some very nice people at the local racing club who are going to tell me who the bird belongs to tomorrow.

SIMZ, I wish I had seen your post earlier! It would have saved me a lot of calling around. OTOH, I spoke to some really nice people tonight, so it was not a waste!

I hope you find the owner. If you do.. check he really wants it back. Hopefully its a good bird and he will use it to breed from.

But, as it had damaged its wing, it will not be useful for him to race it in the future... so he might 'cull' it.

We had the same experience! I found that info AFTER we did a lot of calling and research. One person we contacted even brought his pigeons into one of my classes and did a demonstration with them. So cool!

I raise my own meat chickens, so I am realistic about what may happen to this bird, but I figure I will do my best, and the owner will at least know what happened and the pigeon wasn't played with for a hour before being killed by a neighbor's cat.

I agree with you.

I though.. as you seem to care for it.. you may get to keep it yourself as a pet.

. Rather then send it back if the owner is not going to keep it.

The pigeon has been returned to his owner, who was very happy to get it back. He is going to try to get the wing healed. The pigeon had been missing for days, and had lost a lot of weight. I know it ate like a pig while it was here.

I have plenty to do with dogs, chickens and fish, so I am glad I have not added pigeons to the clan. Because you know that one pigeon would be sad and lonely, so I would have to get it a companion, and then the next thing you know I am The Crazy Pigeon Lady in addition to being The Crazy Gardening Lady, The Crazy Chicken Lady and The Crazy Dog Lady. You get too many of these titles and you become just, plain crazy!

I already have all those titles except the garden one! I have pigeons, chickens, lizards, hermit crab, fire bellied toads, fish and dogs.
