Frack is a tattle-tale!

I say let them all take turns coming in to lay. Think about it not having to go outside in the winter to gather the eggs.

It's a pretty small house. Just the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room downstairs. They wandered around a bit the first time and found the crate. It's kind of behind the front door (as you can see in the pics) and looks like a comfy dark den, so I guess it's the perfect hidey hole to lay an egg! If we ever get the time, we are going to take the door apart and use the wood from it to build up the bottom just a couple of inches so the hay doesn't keep coming out.

Frack, the dark Brahma, lived in the kitchen for a while, recovering from some nasty cuts down her sides from a roo. She is our main house chicken, and the reason we bought the crate. The other guys, I guess, see her coming in and out of the house and got curious. There is always a chicken or two at the front door, but I think three laying in the house will be quite enough for me!

Beware of the cat door! One of our hens learned to come in thru the cat door that was up in the window! It was the bedroom window! I came home numerous nights to Fred (the hen) sitting on the top of my entertainment center - all nested in and ready for bed! She was usually ready to snooze so she was very easy to catch and toss out- Well not so easy to toss out - she put up a fuss and tried to get back in before I had a chance to close the window. One morning - I noticed a tshirt stuck under my night table - I pulled the shirt - Fred came flying out from under the table screaming - the dog is screaming at the chicken - I am screaming at the dog - it was a hecked minute! LOL Ended up - Fred had been coming in at least 3 days while I was at work and layng her eggs on the tshirt!
