Freaking out! Meyer Hatchery and/or the Post Office has lost my order! 1st UPDATE, PICS PAGE 3 - Mor

It might not make you feel any better, but I got my shipment from them this week... 25 assorted rare breed female chicks... I never got an email or tracking number either, called the PO Wed... no chicks... they finally arrived yesterday am and we sprinted over to get them - all but 6 have died (5 were doa, the rest soon followed) and two of those left look terrible. :*( I am guessing they just got stuck somewhere cold or something, but when major nursing care and electrolytes, syringe feeding, etc, can't save them it's just sad. Meyer was very nice when I spoke with them, and stunned at the loss count, so I don't believe this is a regular thing... but still, it's awful. Now what to do? Reship or refund and cut my losses? The problem is I can't get sexed pullets in the unusual breeds around here very easily. Sigh.

I also had a NEVER DELIVERED order from Meyer just last month. They said they had shipped them, but nothing arrived. Ever. So I got my money back and ordered from Ideal instead. Got my chicks promptly and they were all alive and well. Couldn't be happier! And they cost less too!

i ordered from meyers in nov and got a tracking number. But with the regular post office it is pointless because you can't check it like with fed-ex or ups. I called prob 6 different P.O. trying to find were my birds were. Finally one P.O. i called said that yes they do scan all packages when they arrive it doesn't go into there system until that person hooks up their scanner before they leave work.

UPDATE:

It's three strikes for Meyer Hatchery.

Last week they didn't ship my order.

This week I got a call that two of the breeds I wanted (Silver-Laced and Columbian Wyandotte) were unavailable. I understand that this can happen, but after last week's fiasco I was already impatient with Meyer. I was given a list to pick replacements from. None of the breeds were ones I had researched (I'm wanting dual-purpose, homestead chickens) so I just randomly picked some that sounded interesting! (Salmon Faverolle and Silver Lakenvelder)

Today I picked up my birds at 6 AM. Most seem pretty happy and healthy BUT they only shipped 16 of my 17 chicks.

I think I'll try Cackle next time.

Oh no, what a fiasco!

I'm happy to hear that the 16 you did receive arrived safely; however, after all of those mixups, I would order from a different hatchery next time as well.

I can't believe that happened!

I ordered my eight chicks from Myer's (got them last month) and had no problems. I ordered from them b/c I could get a small order AND large variety. So weird how some orders can go totally right and then other orders can go so horribly wrong.

That is so disappointing, especialy when you are so excited to get that box of fluffies. After all of that I cannot believe they wouldn't take the time to be sure your order was correct. My first shipment came from Welp as 17 DOA and 8 alive. They reshipped for me (all alive and accounted for in the next round). Shipping seems so iffy. It is a hard call when it is so hard to get what you want locally (and for a reasonable price).

I am not sure about lakenvelders (except that the roos are gorgeous), but I have some salmon faverolles and they are adorable and a lot of fun. They also lay very well (all winter in fact) and dealt well with both winter and summer in Northern NJ. Apparently, not that I would eat mine, they are also very good table birds.

Yeah, that is one reason why I was attracted to them. Of course my initial 8 birds morphed into 17, but I stuck with them! ;) I'm sure they are probably a fine hatchery but I just had a round of very bad luck.
