And then try to enforce it; you'd be the self-appointed chicken police. You would probably have to take them to small claims court and the filing fee would be more than the roosters were worth or you wouldn't be trying to get rid of them. Anyone who will lie to get the chickens would not hesitate to sign that and then ignore it. There's just no good way to solve this one, I think.

I would be POed. Not that the took it and resold it, if I give an animal to someone or they buy it and then make a profit.... good for them. I would be upset however when I stated that I want these animals to stay with a loving home as a pet, and then they are turned around and sold to just anyone.....

I don't care if it was a mouse or a lion, if someone told me they were caring for an animal and then lied and sold it to just anyone I would be upset. Just because it is a farm animal does not give someone the right to treat it as a food item if it was raised otherwise..... Now if someone got an animal from me and found out that they could not care for it and tried to find it another suitable pet home, no problem, at least they made an effort.

The exact same thing happened with me and my goats. They gushed about how they wanted goats and how I shouldn't give them to Buyer H because he would probably just turn around and sell them ...

3 days later they were on Craigslist and when I emailed them, they said they were going to be getting Nubians and didn't need my LaManchas any longer

I agree with you about the whole lying and being dishonest. I have recently had the same type of situation happen to me. A lady and her whole family came over to check out the farm. Kids, grandma and husband. They came over to get eatting eggs. They came over 2 times, and the next thing I know about a month later she is selling chicks ON CRAIGSLIST from the eggs I gave her. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE FOR HER FAMILY TO EAT!!!!!!!

Had she been honest with me and told me I wouldn't have minded.I also would have quoted her a different price. But to bring your whole family over, and lye to my face is unforgiveable. Needless to say, I will never sell to her again!

I don't understand the shrugging of shoulders from some of these posters have as if it's no big deal and it's the OP's fault for giving them away. I would be very upset. If the OP considered these Roosters food, they probably would have eaten them. So therefore it appears that they were pets. Unfortunate you couldn't keep them, but if they are fighting or mating or causing you trouble, then you made the hard choice to re-home them. You obviously wanted them to go to a happy home to be loved. Many people can love their pets but must adopt them out for various reasons. They still want them to go to a good home.

To me this is no different than if I got a puppy, discovered later I was allergic and needed to find the puppy a new home. People come and say he'd be a precious pet, etc., and I later find out he was sold to a puppy mill. And then people saying to me that it's my fault for not being able to keep the puppy, and it's out of my hands, so who cares.

I don't think the OPs' point is whether they would be food, or whether or not they were being sold for profit. It seems to me that the OP wanted to know that the roosters were going to a good home, as pets. Now the OP has no idea of what fate the roosters will meet. I would be horribly upset. I almost think that people aren't more sympathetic because it's "just a rooster".

I wanted to go get her and not tell them I got her back but I had accepted money for her, given them all her papers etc.. even signed a bill of sale so she was in all the laws theirs to do with as they pleased. Was/Am I hurt YEP, would I sell her a snowball in the hotplace, NOPE lol

Wow. Alot to address so I'll make it all one "lump sum" reply.

I was planning on eatting them if I did not find GOOD homes for them. I was being picky and turned a few down already. I prefer to have them live a life of chicken luxery, but I was prepared to butcher if need be. I know that may sound contradicting, but in this area (as someone mentioned about the fighting making the news in Chattanooga) - I rather give the bird a respectable end and be thankful for the meal than have it go out as a training rooster for a game roo.

It is the point that they lied. They absolutely lied. The whold vegitarian BS and talking about all the chickens they have and how they all run free and are happy with their livestock guard dog. Geesh.

I know it is out of my hands now, but that doesn't make it right. I have tried to contact them to buy them back. No responce. I'll try again in a more clever way.

So, to recap... I didn't NEED to get rid of them. I just was giving them a shot at being pets and saving me from processing so many roosters. I keep saying it, if anyone is going to eat them... it might as well be me. They sold me on the 100 acres of chicken heaven BS and even used the word "pets".

I think most of you understood what I said in the first post. Don't approach me with lies about keeping birds as pets if you have no intention of keeping them as anything. Get a job. This location is notorious for fighting and I can't get into all that due to rule #2 but, honestly, if you aren't keeping them as pets I would keep them myself and either make room or eat them. They are better off that way verses being used as a training bird.

sonoran... I have been thinking all day about this and I think your contract is a good idea. Some roos are special enough to not be eatten, but still needing another home. I like that.

The 'bait bird' problem is exactly why I never give roos away. They always have a price, usually a high-enough one to ensure they don't become 'bait birds'. I have turned several people down that I know raise games (see them carrying their 'pet' roos around at auction....pet my foot), or I have raised the price to an unbelievable amount to deter unwanted buyers. But that's me. I understand your being upset that they lied to you, but honestly, if they get $10 for the roosters, chances are the roos will go to a good home. I can't get $10 for laying hens in this area.

You are right. I will not give another bird away unless (and only unless) I KNOW they person very well. Like i said in the OP.... this is the SECOND time. I think the economy has something to do with it, but this area is notorious for the fighting. I think I'll end up processing alot. I will be respectable and kind and thank them for their service.

I too won't sell to anyone who raises games... ESPECIALLY when roosters are all they have filling up their front lawn.


Well, I'm working on getting them back as we speak and I'm working on creating some awareness. These "flippers" lie to the seller (or giver) and they equally lie to the next buyer. How do they know history or temperment... and often, they don't even know the breed! Don't get me started. I think it's horrible. It's bad business.
