I am 45 years old and got my fanny tore up by hickory switches, a belt, a boat oar once, wooden spoons, a heavy hand....it never killed me, I am not emotionally or mentally distraught but I did to obey my parents and elders, behave in a respectful manner and understand what is acceptable and what is not. Some children do not GET IT with timeouts, lectures, grounding and etc. Just as children learn by different means...visual, audio, hands on etc. They are not all alike. My son, never a problem talking to him. My daughter...I could ground her, timeout her and take away everything but her bed , dresser and lamp for 4 months...she would wait you out. But, bust her backside and suddenly she got a clue.

At least this parent (if it is a parent) is trying to discipline their child after obviously trying other methods. do not be so hasty to ASSume.

Sorry this is a pet peeve of mine big time...and it only gets worse when I see these disrespectful hooligans on our streets who needed a good spanking years ago.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Also, consistency and following through is key to raising kids also. My sister, bless her heart, is famous (infamous?) in my family (yeah, we all know her "discipline" is a joke) for "knock it off or you're gonna get it" . My nephews (10 and 3) are like "yeah, okay whatever"! She never ever follows through, now Aunt TT(me) on the other hand, gives them the look and oh boy, they OBEY!! I've only smacked them a couple of times, but they know I mean it, because I FOLLOW THROUGH!! EVERY TIME! Sorry for the caps!! And I'm their favorite aunt!!

I think a lot of kids these days SHOULD be spanked..and why not use a small paddle,wooden spoon or as my mom did a flyswatter or one of those pieces of track from a hotwheels set..oh yes..most kids these days have no respect for others or others property,or elders,or neighbors,or..oh,I could go on and on..my friends grew up in Texas..they said if they got a licking at school their dad would give it twice as bad when they got home..but I tell you what,I love their dad and he raised some well behaved honorable respectful kids..
