Fugly Farm

I thought maybe I forgot to let the ducks out today because I hadn't heard them all morning. I found everyone in the little yard hanging out together. Last night I fell asleep and hubs went out to put them away. They were all in the coop but freaked out because of his flashlight.

I'd freak out too if I was in bed and someone shone a flashlight in my eyes :lau

Me too! I’m happy they made their way into the coop on their own, they’re not thrilled with herding. I just have to stay awake long enough for the sun to go down.

You really know how to wear out the pups IM :love
They love to go and I enjoy spending the time with no distractions. They know if we both get dressed in the morning it’s going to be a great day :)

I was outside before the sun was completely up watering the veggies. The tomato plants are still pretty small but growing fruit already. The squash flowers are spent so we should see fruit soon and the luffa is growing a nice long runner. Still have a watermelon plant and an Armenian cuke but the garlic doesn’t look so hot and I’m not sure if it’s the heat or not enough water. Maybe both. I might pull a couple and see what’s going on under the soil. I decided to check walmart for another geranium since Lowe’s and HD only had red and light pink. I found one with dark pink flowers that have a light pink center. I also picked up two purple lantana. One will go between a couple of shrubs in a planter against the west wall of the yard. The other I’m not sure about yet. The Arabian lilac is still doing great and the TX sage is getting really big again.

The ducks are all together under the lemon tree right now. This morning Bean, Pip and Jasper were in the little yard in the pool and Fig, Luna, Pearl and Yoshi were in the pool by the lemon tree. I’ve noticed they are divided like this throughout part of the day but tend to hang out together in the afternoons until they’re active again to forage before bed. I added some straw to their bedding this morning and scraped the poop off the wood and blocks. It’s pretty easy care until you have to move all that bedding though.

What type of squash did you plant IM? We grew a lot of varieties in FL, love the various winter ones, they taste so good.

Won't be long and we'll need new garden pictures :pop
Um, they’re a small squash that is supposed to be similar in taste to butternut I think. I can’t remember, I’ll have to dig out my seeds and let you know. I’ll get some pics tomorrow, it’s not that great though, I assure you!

I like the patty pan and yellow crook neck, zucchini is ok but winter squash I can never cook and make it taste good at the same time :hit

The way I cook winter squash is to cut them in half, take out the seeds and then place the pieces in a baking dish cut side down. Add a little water and cover with foil. Bake them in the oven until fork-soft. Then scoop out the soft flesh (doesn't that sound gross?) and mash it with butter, s&p like mashed potatoes. Or just leave the soft flesh (ugh, gross again) in the skin and add a pat of butter and s&p. Pretty simple but that's how we like it.
