Fugly Farm

Google says it’s 35 F and I believe it. I had to move the hose a little bit and it’s frozen, maybe should have let it drip last night. The sheets on the raised beds had ice on them and one was heavy enough to lay on the spinach. I hung those to dry and put in the little hoops I made from pex pipe and bamboo sticks so I can lay the sheets on top tonight. Didn’t have enough pex cut for the spinach bed so I stuck the bamboo in it strategically and that will have to do. The chickens got some scratch to keep them busy but the ducks preferred playing in the mud.

There are two black bins in the garden that I’m going to move to the shade garden, consolidate the soil and amend for ginger. Definitely replacing the jalapeno plant and need to pick up a couple of tomato plants in a couple weeks.

So far the dragon fruits are still alive. I’m debating about those. We weren’t particularly impressed with the fruit we found at the store, but that could just be that it’s store bought vs home grown. I may cut back to one pot of those, I don’t want to give up entirely but I don’t see it as a popular thing to eat by itself. It could work in a salad, fruit or otherwise, because it’s fairly neutral in taste and not overly sweet.

It’s cold enough that I really should clean out the shed. Otherwise it’ll be get too hot and I’ll use that as an excuse to not get it done. Planning that for tomorrow.

I think I’m going to use a bucket and scoop method of watering in the garden. It’s a huge PITA to get the hose in there and I have to constantly watch the chickens so they don’t get in. Yes there’s a gate, but I have to maneuver the hose under it and between the bits that stick down and it mows over whatever is in the low bed.

ETA: This was my breakfast. I am obsessed with Kinders All Purpose Seasoning right now. Love it on cottage cheese or plain yogurt for breakfast too, but it is good on almost anything and not overly salty.

The hoops worked great in the gard n to keep the sheets off the plants. There was no ice or frost on the sheets and it was windy overnight but they stayed on the beds.

Purchased some Jerusalem artichokes to grow this year, and two new to me plants are Egyptian spinach and Roselle. The spinach will grow in the heat so it’s a green I can hopefully grow for salads. Roselle is an edible hibiscus; the leaves and flowers are edible and the calyx can be made into jam or syrup, used for drinks and can be eaten raw as well.

I found about a dozen chicken eggs, all about pullet size. Attila lays a small egg, or at least she did last year so I’m not sure who is laying and who isn’t.

DH got a call from his sister, his mom is likely going to pass in the next few days. She has dementia so this has been on the horizon for a while, but it seems like it just rushed in.

I'm sorry to hear that your mother-in-law isn't well, IM. Where does she live?

Thanks Janie, she’s in California. I’m not even close to my own family let alone the in laws, but I feel bad for DH.
