Fugly Farm

The crew hasn’t been getting any scratch lately, just their feed and what they forage plus some greens a few days a week. So I tossed scratch into the coop; Henna and the boys were easy to coax in there. Attila was out in the open and while she wouldn’t let me pick her up she kindly cornered herself in the small coop so I was able to catch her. The girls and Phoenix actually slept in there. Phoenix all snuggled up with Henna, he hasn’t ever slept inside before. I think Selene is broody 🙄 The duck eggs aren’t even fertile but she hid all day yesterday. I guess I didn’t find all the hiding spots.

I thought maybe feeding the crew a snack, just their feed, would draw out Selene and it worked; I did a better job blocking off where I think she has been. It’s dark under there and she’s mostly black and brown so not easy to see. Tried to hold out to make sure but I was in the sun at that point. It’s over 90 already with 37% humidity, I couldn’t hack it. If I don’t see her out and about later then I know I’ll have to suck it up tomorrow. While I was standing there Phoenix and his mom walked by and I noticed he has that pretty green sheen in his tail; his neck feathers are finally getting bigger but I hope they don’t fully cover his neck and chest. I’ve been giving them rehydrated BSFL every couple days for extra protein, hope it helps the girls with their molt. Also hoping their molt indicates the end of broodiness because they have been ridiculous this year. There was a nice breeze this morning, slightly cool on my skin and it was under 90, very nice until the sun came up. Temps should be close to normal so no ice for now, but there’s water in the wading pools and lots of cool, damp dirt after I watered plants today.

This was supposed to be a GIF.
Sherlock Holmes, and Watson.

Wind from storms damaged this lilac. Probably mostly my fault, I should have trimmed it back more than I did last Spring. Connor and Ripley were begging vigorously.

Igor helped me trim off the branches that needed to go, but I’ll need to trim more tomorrow morning to take some of the weight off the top. This will definitely need frost protection come winter.

Draining the duck pool so I can put down the pavers to reduce mud. I have a better plan to keep Selene from her nest tomorrow if it’s where I think it is, but it’s going to require shoveling first so will be out there good and early. I’m also going to move a few fake eggs into areas where the ducks have laid before to encourage them to lay there again.

I’m bringing the chicks inside for the night, they can sleep in the laundry room. I need to flood the shade garden because of ants. Might have to move them out of there, will have to see.

:barnieI can NOT figure out where that duck is hiding eggs

Maybe she's part Easter rabbit!

Wow, that is a huge lilac! Good luck with the hidden duck egg spot.

:yesss: I caught that duck just as she emerged from her hiding spot. Beefed up security a little bit but have to stick close to my phone for now so can’t do more out there this morning but if she can’t get in then it’s fine for now.
