fuzzi's Chicken Journal

I once spent about 4 hours of my evening coming up with a belt contraption for a chick feeder. Not sure if this would compute for a waterer, too, but a series of cable ties and duct pvc straps made it hangable, when the baling wire wouldn't cooperate at all!

I love how you used odds and ends to create a solution.

Here is my rain water collection system with IBC tote.

I cut the gutter, used two adapters to connect it to 2 inch pvc pipe.

This IBC tote's cap is able to connect to a pvc pipe seamlessly with some adapter.

The pipe on the right, below the incoming water, is for overflow.

The tote is covered with black plastic so that algae won't grow inside.

Maybe your rain barrels will motivate me to set these up.
They came from the Mt Olive Pickle Co. Food grade too. I have 4.

I bought four like that.

I'm going to put one under each of the two downspouts, then connect the others as overflow barrels.

They sell for $200 each retail, but were on sale for $79 each, "cash & carry". The barrels were available without hardware for $32. Yes, I could have made them for less than $79, and I would have gone DIY if the barrels weren't on sale.

Roofers are coming on Friday, gutter installation is scheduled for the following Monday. I bought the concrete blocks this morning, so all I will need to acquire is the overflow connector hoses. And since I have been advised to not collect water from the first rainfall after the shingles are installed I have a couple weeks to complete the project.

You've given me something to contemplate and consider. Thank you.

Is that the faucet on the left?

Today's chicken project!

I've been wanting to remove the wheelbarrow from the back of the hoop coop since I don't store straw there anymore. What motivated me to get it done was some of the hens laying eggs in the straw underneath the wheelbarrow, a very difficult place to access.

I had to wiggle the A-frame roost forward, there just wasn't enough clearance to get the wheelbarrow around or over it. My dh helped manoeuver it past the roost. Then I pushed the A-frame back, closer to the main roost.

Ooh! Dirt and straw rearranged!

How much water does that hold?
