fuzzi's Chicken Journal

They sell for $200 each retail, but were on sale for $79 each, "cash & carry". The barrels were available without hardware for $32. Yes, I could have made them for less than $79, and I would have gone DIY if the barrels weren't on sale.
I think you got a great deal! I can't wait to see them all hooked up.

Roofers are coming on Friday
We did this a couple months ago. Hopefully won't have to do that again until we're ancient. :gig

Here is my rain water collection system with IBC tote.

I cut the gutter, used two adapters to connect it to 2 inch pvc pipe.

This IBC tote's cap is able to connect to a pvc pipe seamlessly with some adapter.

The pipe on the right, below the incoming water, is for overflow.

The tote is covered with black plastic so that algae won't grow inside.
I really like this too.

The IBC tote again.

close up on the faucet. Earlier this year it became a great bird nest:rolleyes:. You may be able to see a little reminisce of it.

Top of the tote. I placed a mosquito screen there to filter out large objects. The pipe fitting there is loose as you can see. Occasionally I pull it out to clean the mosquito screen.

How did you get the black plastic under the metal grid? What type/thickness did you use?

I've seen black plastic disintegrate in a couple months outside.
There are two bars of the metal grid holding up the plastic tote. You can unscrew them and then you are able to get the tote out.

I never put the two metal bars back.

I can't remember the thickness. I went to homedepot and bought something that is not super thick. I've had this rainwater collection system for maybe 3 years and it is holding up.

I saw a tote (must have been online somewhere) that was painted to help prevent algae.

It was removed from the cage and painted solid black. Then a decorative design was painted on the black. I think it was tropical fish like an aquarium.
Can't remember where I saw it.

Corn on the cob!
IMG_20240825_145725077~2.jpg

I broke it into three pieces and tossed them in different areas of the run. Silas kept grabbing one and trying to run away. It was funny, but I couldn't get a picture of it.

Here Esther, Joanna, and Zacchaeus all try to get some corn from Tamar...three on one but she's not giving it up.

I stopped at TSC to grab chicken feed and they had syringes! The largest was a 20ml, but that would work better than the little 10ml I was using on Lydia. I bought two, a spare is good to have on hand.

Good to remember. I've spent my budget (and then some!) on six rain barrels but might explore other options in the future.

Clever.
