Holding out a little hope for #4 and #5

From the chart below I would guess the chick died about Day 15.

Gauze pads will work. Cotton balls, paper towel, cloth...whatever you have really.

What I usually do is put something like a couple of cotton balls, piece of gauze, etc. in a small plastic container (or ziplock bag). Pour a little Chlorhexidine (or treatment of choice) over them to somewhat saturate them. I just take that to where I'm going to work on the bird. As for how much, just swab/wipe the wound. Most of these dry fairly quickly.
I'm going to do that tonight. Last night thunderstorms were rolling through.

I was at TSC last weekend, and they had Blue Rocks, sex-linked hybrids that are friendly and sociable and good decent layers of brown eggs. I was enabling helping my neighbors get some chicks that they had been looking for earlier this spring. They also have nine of my little eggs in their incubator :lol:
Thanks!

When I got home Naomi was off the nest, wanting to get out of the brooder. She ate and was having a good dirt bath when I went back inside the house.

I left the 2 "maybe" eggs in the nest in case she wants to go back. The other three I opened, two had very dead chicks inside, probably gone at least a week. Third was just mush, might not have developed at all. If she's back on the nest I am going to go over to Tractor Supply TONIGHT and get her a couple chicks. They have some, I called. Her virtue should be rewarded.

If she abandons the nest I'll just toss the eggs, and put some fresh ones in the incubator. I'm planning on doing that, anyway.

@Wyorp Rock, thank you.

That was extremely helpful.

I'm going to do the sniff test when I get home tonight, if the eggs haven't hatched, and candle any that pass. I didn't set up the incubator yet, but it's in the house and just needs to be plugged in to check the eggs. It has a built-in candler on the top.

Tamar is the lowest in the flock, and yet brooded two eggs successfully last year. Her "daughter" is the loquacious Joanna. I've not seen Tamar drink, but have made sure that food is tossed her way while the others are eating, and have seen her consume it. Her face and comb color is good, and she moves around well. Since she has always been skittish I will go out to the coop after dark and "swab" as per your suggestion. How much, just a light sheen, coating? What do you use to apply it? I have some of the small gauze pads on hand.
I just wanted to mention that Chlorhexidine needs to be left on the wound/treatment area. It's not very effective as a wipe type disinfectant. My preferred wipe/cleaning disinfectant is iodine.
