It was really cloudy today but the temp got up to 66°F. The first crocus of the year bloomed. Actually there were two of them but the yellow one looked the worse for the wear. I suspect "fowl" play as in turkeys.

We are always looking for ways to recycle and repurpose. We have been saving plastic berry containers for the day we could find a use for them. Over the winter we started sprouting oats and wheat for the flock (and us) in them and they work perfectly. We had been using sprouting trays before and they were messy and had too much waste. These are a one day serving and all the chaff flushes out of the container when watered. We also use mason jars with screen lids as starters and then dump them into the plastic berry containers to continue sprouting. This is probably not a new idea, but haven't seen it before.

I’ve been wondering if there is something we can use them for too! What do you sprout in them?

Organic oats, red wheat, mung beans, chick peas so far. It should work for any sproutable grains and legumes. Once or twice a day we'll hold the containers over the sink and run some water over them and let them drain. We keep an old towel under them since they leak a little after wetting them down. For small seeds you might need to put a square of paper towel or screen in the bottom of the container over the drain holes. Some of the berry containers have vent holes in the bottom larger than the seeds.

It has been nice and warm here in Texas- I have been in the yard planting all sorts of roses and annuals. I made a rock garden in the space between the car port and the fence - about 32 inches wide, the length of the carport. I put a solar fountain on the fence and a couple of planters one on each side of it. I have a couple of urn planters ordered for the ground in front of it. Next to the gate I have a lion- hope all looks good later- Doesn't get much sun- I am putting fern in the urns but what kind of small thing should I put in the planters on the fence? I don't want water dripping down the fence and rotting the wood. I thought about fake flowers, but my friend said she would knock my eyes to my throat if I did that. LOL. So, any ideas?

If you don't want water on your fence, then I would go with silks. There are silks these days that look so real you have to touch them to find out. Get some at Michael's, Hobby Lobby or your local florist.

If you want real, how about some succulents? They don't take much water and there are so many varieties.

I planted my Brandywines, some more marigolds and my kohlrabi. Also starting taking down the tarps I have up for wind breaks on the barn. Hope to take down the clear plastic over the next couple of days.

Thanks for the tips. I think I will go with silks and hope she doesn't punch me. I keep a succulent garden in the back with marigolds. I don't think this area gets enough sunlight for them. Tomorrow will be setting out my tomatoes, watermelon, squash, black eyed peas and a few patio plants I have kept overwinter in the house. Yay.

I got my first daffodil bloom today but didn't take time to get a picture. We went to Lowes, Kroger, and Walmart. I cut the wood for my lean-to i'm building for the bunnies. Then painted it. Looking forward to getting that done.

I have spent two days planting in the garden- and still not through. I try to plant perennial flowers in the yard- and annuals on the patio. I just planted 9 rose bushes, 21 succulents and marigolds, 1 Jasmine, 3 Hostas, 1 Hibiscus, 3 purple clover, and a dozen begonias. Still have a lot to do- gardening, like chickens, can be a full time job- but boy will the yard look good- hopefully.
