The male blossoms will be flower then stem, the female blossoms will look like the bottom of the flower is swollen, which is where the squash forms.
The female blossoms will have the base shaped like whatever the fruit will be. Female squash blossoms will look like a mini squash at the base of the flower, female cucumbers will look like a mini cucumber and female pumpkins will look like a mini pumplin. Watermelon and cantaloupe will follow this pattern.

Up early, all slept out already.
I think I have a good idea of how to train my grape vines. I studied lots of youtube .
they really took off after I dosed them with fish emulsion.
We are supposed to be getting some really rough storms starting about noon today. I hope the weather guys are wrong. I don't need tornados or hail..
So far the deer is leaving the raised beds alone. I don't think she likes the smell of the fish emulsion I am using.
Annie weeded the strawberries. One bed is sending out shoots, getting blossoms and has some strawberries on.
I think I will wipe out the other bed and transfer the runners into that bed. They are two different kinds of berries.

we are getting plenty of rain. Only it is so hot and dry between the storms things dry out fast. I spent a couple of hours watering trees and grapes , yesterday. No rain forecasted until Thursday. I will have to water again before then.
My tomato vines are not too bushy. but there are lots of tomatoes on them.
One beefsteak has a cluster of 8. I had to add extra support to that branch.
the resident doe is leaving the plants alone, so far.
I don't think she is leaving the yard and going into the woods. there is plenty of hiding places on the 3 acres.

I guess I am just a glutton for punishment.
I am thinking I want to straighten out the old tangled up grape arbor. the posts and wire are long gone. all the vines are lying on the ground in a tangled mess. this will not be a one day job. I figure at least a month. I think there are about 8 vines . Nothing lines up in a straight row, So I think I will have to make a T post for each vine.. Lots of pruning in my future. I know summer is not the best time to do this. I will put off the heavy pruning until fall.
I will get rid of the dead stuff now.
the new grapes are doing fine. a couple main trunks made it up to the top wire on the arbor. I expect the others to get there before fall.

The wild grape at our place is getting totally out of control. I am going to attack back with a pruners this weekend and reclaim my fences and the water font area. I swear a tendril reached out and wrapped around my wrist, trying to drag me into its mass last night as I was trying to turn on the water for the garden. The grape has completely covered the 5' tall Asiatic lilies and is starting to bend them over.

One of those at side door I rarely use, tried to drag me in too. I fought it off this morning when I was trying to bring in some garlic to dry.
