Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Zone 5 update,,
I'm close enough to the lake, so no frost here yet, DD that lives 40 miles further from lake already got frost a few times.
So far,, weather has been great,,, but all things come to an end. :old :(:idunno
These pix were taken on Halloween. My Dalia's did wonderful. First time planting them. After frost,,,, I will dig up tubers from pots, and store them over-winter in Cardboard box,,, in some peat moss. (in utility room,, no freezing temps). If anyone has any tricks/hints/suggestions about these,, please chime in. This is my first time doing such.
I have over-wintered cannas roots before. Mom told me to not let dry out too much. Sprinkle with little water occasionally. It worked.👍

This is my Tulip tree. Turned really nice golden color. This is also the tree that produces flowers:love

This is my other Tulip. Purchased, and planted same time as the other one. Only about 100 feet apart from the other one. This one never produced flowers in its lifetime. Also note,, the color seems to go from green to brown,,, rather than GOLDEN:(:th

I love that candy stripe flower! :love I used to dig dahlias and store them in my damp dungeon. I would divide huge clumps, let them dry, sprinkle with sulphur then store in paper grocery bags in the damp dungeon. Where I promptly forgot about them. If you can remember to check on them now and again kudos to you! The sulphur step was totally obnoxious, I probably didn’t need to do it.

I really enjoyed dahlias. They bloomed from summer clear through until December most years. I’m going to think about doing them again. Lots of impact for your trouble!

Supposed to be just below freezing over night and just above during the day this entire week. Not unusual this time of year but given that is 20-30 degrees lower than last week (which WAS unusual), it is a bit of a shock. We kinda didn't get our slow drift to winter temps this year.

3" of snow has melted off of the driveway.
being that it is so cold, that really surprised me.
I guess the sun is still giving off some heat.
there is plenty left on the grassy areas, though.
Saw a nice buck in the field across the road
yesterday. there are deer tracks all over our yard.
they must be coming around after dark.
we have a resident doe and two of her fawns.

Only 2" here. I forgot and left a gate open last night and had 3 deer in here this morning.

I would think they would just go over the fence anyway. The whitetail jump my 4 ft e chicken net fence.....or stick their head in and strangle themselves.
