I was watching my Sebastopols yesterday and saw them chasing after a cricket...that was a first for me. I didn't know they would eat insects.

Have any of you seen them eating insects ?
 
That's what I would think, they are protecting their area from the viscious monsters!

My embden ate a fly once, when it was a baby. The gosling was sitting on the grass between my feet, and the fly landed on my leg. "Land on MY mommy?? Take THAT!"

They probably want some extra protein and calcium in laying season and can definitely use it post laying season when they molt. My Friday loves worms with a passion and the flock in general have developed an obsession with grubblies “soldier fly larva.”

I actually suspect that sauropods weren't the gentle giants we make them out to be, particularly during nesting season. I have no doubt those things would snap up any chance at protein and swallow it whole when the need arose.
