GEESE OWNERS HELP - BROKEN LOWER BILL/BEAK

If the two edges will fit easily back together I've heard of doctors actually closing wounds with super glue. I'd call your vet and ask them if that would be an option.

That would work if the bill was like the beak of a bird or chicken (so keratin and not living tissue)...unfortunately it is not (please do not try superglue) In addition the upper beak is less complicated than the lower and you really will need professional help IMHO.
I have to go now before the store closes but will post more info when I get back (I have one article below for you illustrated) It would help a lot if you posted pics. I suggest you call the nearest waterfowl rescue/rehabber and ask if they know of someone in your area (vet) to do this type of repair work as I do not believe you are able to get what you need to repair it (recquires special dental glues etc)

Thanks so very much for all the responses - it is not eating well but eating, swimming and lightly grooming itself again.

We did the liquid bandage thing - didn't work - super glue, didn't work - thought it was gonna but - the bleeding stopped almost immediately.......thank God! It is obvious it is tender but it swims in their pool and I have seen it eating lightly - other wise it comes out of its pen in the am with the other two with wings spread, talking to me like it always does and goes for a swim. So, I am thinking it will be ok - I will try and get some pics by tomorrow.

Again thanks so much for the help. You all are the best!

Do you have a zoo nearby that you could call & talk to the bird specialist there, or find out what vet they use?
or a teaching veterinary hospital at the university?
or wildlife & fisheries--they usually have raptor rehab people.

I'm thinking, this is something that people who fool w/wild birds might come in contact with, & they might know of something else you could do.

I know here, my local vet wouldn't have a clue, but if something happens to one of my geese, LSU Vet school in Baton Rouge, La has an avian veterinary clinic & specialist, & we have a guy &his wife who do rehab w/hawks just a couple miles from where we live.

Here is the pic's I promised - the goose is finally eating soup - chick starter/grower and water - swimming and lightly grooming

I cant seem to upload the photo of it swimming - but I do believe it is going to be ok.

The injury is at the front of the beak not the back - that's a piece of grass.

It isn't a good photo at all of the wound, but did not want to catch it again and stress it to get a better one - it really pigged out on the "soup" - I was so thankful. They are just pets but my vet doesn't treat anything but small animals - dogs and cats.

dlhunicorn, that one article is awesome! Thanks so much for your input and wonderful site.

...on the surface, looking at the photos I mean, the injury (as far as the amount of beak that has broken off) does not appear to be as bad as I initially feared ...) however as I mentioned before the goose has living tissue instead of a keratin beak (keratin equivalent to the human fingernail) so I am unsure on the amount of danger from infection... I would restrict her access to any natural feed/water sources and make sure any and all food sources in the water are fRESH for this reason.

OMG I KNOW , YEARS AGO my young Toulouse goose , about 10 months old, he had ripped his top beak almost off , it was hanging by a thread OF SKIN , but thank goodness for that , AS LONG AS THE BEAK WAS STILL CONNECTED IN SOME WAY I KNEW had the ability to repair him, & I did...! I first called my vet and he told me how they would try to fix him by CUTTING AWAY THE ENTIRE BEAK UP TO HIS SKULL AND THEN SCREW IN A METAL BEAK , I KNEW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT AS I HAD READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT WILD GEESE WHO HAD THEIR BEAKS COUGH IN TRAPS, AND THE WILD LIFE PEOPLE HAD REPAIRED THEM IN THAT MANOR WHICH I FELT WAS HORRIBLE FOR THE BIRD, SO I ASKED THE VET , WAS THERE ANY OTHER WAY...? HE SAID NO...! SO TOLD MY VET THAT IF I COULD NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIX HIM, I WOULD CALL BACK, MY VET KNEW ME WELL...lol.. I had cured many lost cases of every kind of animal given to me to heal, and i could always find a way , so I said thank you & hung up the phone , BUT AT THAT VERY MOMENT THIS VOICE IN MY HEAD SAID GET THE CRAZY GLUE, SO I DID thank goodness i had some on hand, and I knew time was of the essence...! in repairing his beak, so I GLUED HIS BEAK BACK ON, I knew it would be at least a good try , SINCE I HAD READ MANY ARTICLES ABOUT CRAZY GLUE BEING USED FOR ALL KINDS OF MEDICAL REASONS , and so it was at least worth a try...!! I HAD THE BEST KIND OF CRAZY GLUE FOR THE JOB IT WAS THE GEL TYPE, SO IT WAS NOT RUNNY AND I COULD CONTROL IT, AND THIS HAD TO BE DONE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE , sooo being very careful i glued his beak back on, then put him a big box with his head sticking out the top, to keep his beak from HITTING into any thing that could harm his newly attached beak , I waited for hours before I even gave him any water WHICH I FED HIM WITH MY HAND ONLY , then the next day I fed him home made bread soaked in fresh goats milk & hand fed him that WAY every day for weeks , until i was sure his beak was ok , so as the weeks went by he healed great...! and we spent many hours watching TV together in our TV room off the kitchen as he healed, his beak was healed up & growing normally in a short time, so he could go back out side to play with is family by that next month HE DID JUST FINE , & ABOUT 8 MONTHS LATER HIS BEAK WAS ALL GROWN OUT & DOWN AND HE HAD A THIN LINE ACROSS the very bottom edge of his beak, showing were he once had his beak RIPPED OFF & reattached with crazy glue.....lol.... but thank GOODNESS he had that chance to live a good life & he did...! I dont give up easily and would have to think long & hard before killing any of my charges, i knew I would find a way to save him...!!! and I did....!!! YES INDEED MY SWEET LITTLE GOOSEY BOY WOULD LIVE A GOOD LONG LIFE , THANK GOODNESS...!!
