Genetics creating barred Araucana

I have been getting light barred araucana from one of my breeding pens for the last year. The parents are not barred. I am wondering if I breed back to black if it will darken up the barring. I every once in a while get dark barred chicks also. The barring is coming out of my splash and blue pen.

Riverman, you will get barred EEs from your pair, but neither the mother nor the father are araucana. I am not nearly as much of a purist as are ameraucana breeders, but there is a distinct difference between EE and araucana.

You mean, the moms are Easter Eggers

Ameraucanas and EE's are two very separate varieties.

I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread though, barred Araucanas have already been around for quite a while. Gary Ramey, Ann Cushing, and a couple other people already have been breeding them, and I'm one of the handful out there who also have barred Araucanas from Gary's flock. (cashdl being another)

If anything, we just need to work on improving these birds. They already have yellow skin, no tails, tufts, a very nice body to the SOP, and very nice, big blue eggs. . . It is just that most have a lot of rustiness/gold leaking, and almost all of them have very poor, smudged barring.

So Riverman,

Your eggs are due to hatch this week. Let us know how it goes.
I would love to see pics.

I have the prettiest little barred araucana hen. Her barring is light but she is georgous. I am going to take a pic and post it.

Yeah! My eggs should be hatching this week! Some of the eggs that were supposed to hatch last week died(blood rings) so the next couple are suppose to hatch around friday! I've been putting eggs in the bator every other day from my ladies. I'll post pics asap

And Lanae I wanna see your barred araucana hen! Post some pics pleeeease.

Some of my own barred birds, same stock as Lanae's. Working on improving the barring as well as getting rid of the gold leakage this spring. The splash barred birds look basically like dirty splash, but they're barred. I'll be working on blue x blue to bring some normal barring into here too, so I can really see what flaws and fine points I'm working with.

Had a lot more than this, too, but I culled a LOT. These are all straight from Gary Ramey's stock, none yet are from my own breeding.

My barreds are coming out of my splash duckwing araucana roo. He is not a Gary Ramey bird, but my hens are. I have a blue Gary Ramey roo that I may put with some hens I got from him to see if they produce the barring. It is so much fun to see what you get as you move birds around.
