Genetics for Pieds

Just a little note on what I know about birds split to white. All birds I have ever owned that were split to white (about 20) have had 1 to 10 white flights on either wing, or both wings. 80% of them have had white flights on only on one wing. None have ever had a white patch on the throat (which I have been told is a general indicator of being dark pied).

very good point, some have the throat patch ,but not all. Yes number of white flights can be different numbers, but will have a few.

the white throat patch can be either split white or dark pied.

I think this is providing further evidence for one of my points -- the White gene is variable in expression when a bird has only one copy of it. I think this is the reason for the variation from "Pied" (as Deerman calls it) and "Loud Pied." Just as the split to White birds vary in the amount of white they have, the birds that have one copy of the Pied gene and one copy of the White gene will vary as well. What this means is that how much white a bird with one Pied gene and one White gene ends up having is due to the luck of the draw, and probably can't be selectively bred.

I am posting this link on both related threads. In the picture of the 2011 hen, notice (you have to look closely) the white flight at the lower part of the wing close to the thigh. She is the offspring of a blue male crossed with hen that is blue split.

This has been my most typical blue split white offspring, and I find it very useful determining which offspring I would like to keep for producing whites if I don't have any.

Thanks Deerman, Minxfox, & AquaEyes!!!

this thread came back up, AquaEye i listed split pied x split pied, that post should have been
