getting a hen to go broody

I have some rir hens and some pr hens any ideas on how to get them broody being that there a petty unbroody breed

Unfortunately there is no way to make a hen go broody. You can do things to encourage the behavior such as not collecting eggs and leaving them in the nesting boxes, but with Rhode Island Reds the chances are slim. The broodines was purposefully bred out of them so that production would be higher. I won't say that it won't happen, since I've even had a sex link go broody once, but it is very rare. I'm not sure what breed you are referring to by pr, Partridge Rock? If so those actually do go broody so there's a good chance one of those will sit for you, but I wouldn't count on the Rhode Island Reds.

Okay, yes, those are bred to not be broody as well. If you don't want to invest in an incubator I'd suggest you get a hen from a breed know to be broody, such as a cochin, silkie, or orpington, etc.
