Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Havent heard of it before but from the pictures of the sites I found it on... It appears to be similar to Advantage here in the US. those are for dogs and cats.

There are sprays these days for horses that have many of the same ingredients. And IF you know you are going to be riding in an infested or unknown infestation level... Spraying with those may help. But horses sweat and sweat washes off many insect repellants. Most of us focus on repelling flies around the face and ears.... and tender indefensable places like tummies and little folds of skin in their arm pits. There are roll on repellants for those places.

But I am not a fan of chemicals... herbally derived chemicals are pretty good in this case. We (horse people) make our own fly sprays Using Avon;s Skin So Soft which is a hand lotion and add in vinegar and eucalyptus and distilled water.

U.S. Forest Service Bug Spray Recipe

1 cup water

1 cup Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil

2 cups vinegar

1 tbs. Eucalyptus oil (found in health food stores)

Optional: few tablespoons of citronella oil.

the one I know made a gallon and you can tweak the Skin so soft because I cant bear the smell of it.

deb

Shake spray bottle well before spraying on horse, human or dog!

This sounds sort of interesting, might have to try it sometime. I'm guessing the lotion is just a vessel to mix the active ingredients in, and that the brand makes no difference?

I was flabbergasted when someone described me as exotic looking a few years back on a trip to Italy. Maybe those Italian girls have a soft spot for us Vikings.

I have had some success with taking high doses of Vitamin B complex. Reduced it by 80 to 90%.

By high doses I mean about 3x the recommended daily dose

If you have grazing animals getting eaten by them then put out a sulfur salt block. It changes the smell of their blood and the mosquitoes don't like it.

Penny, this is so interesting. I didn't know there was a way to stop them. Maybe I'll lick the sulfur salt block too. except I'm allergic to sulfer.

I will be taking extra B complex . Winner-winner chicken dinner. Thanks

I tried tracing my husband's roots for him, after he expressed an interest in it. We found a lot of dead ends.. but a few leads were very good. One ancestor was a German man who actually moved to the US to join the revolutionary war. Interestingly enough, all leads end up in the South of the US. These folks have been staying put for several centuries

It even goes as far as that several lines have been living in and around the same few counties in Alabama as were we live.

And then I come along and toss some fresh Dutch blood in the mix

I first learned of it through a friend who was a Muleskinner.... and she learned it from friends who also owned mules. There is nothing so amusing as walking by a Mule that smells of Skin so soft lotion.... The lotion in of itself has been determined to be an insect repellant .... so I am told.

Or a 16 hand Spotted Saddle Horse with out any spots.

The DW make up a concoction that is about 1/2 Skin so Soft with a few other things mixed in.
NO, the Skin so Soft is the MAIN repellant, and the other stuff just helps make it sprayable and last a bit longer! (and cut the smell abit also)
