I'm so glad you remembered those pictures. I love their type. I love the tail angle in the hen and the short back of the cock bird. So beautiful. Gives us something to aim towards. Thanks Julie!!
I think a problem with breeding these guys is that the lacing takes a very long time to appear in certain places and in other places it happens rather quickly. So one is tempted to cull too soon. DragonLady warned me not to choose my breeders too quickly. Boy, was I glad I waited. The biggest change was between 5 months and 6 months. Some had lacing from 4 wks on. But, some didn't and it took up to 6 months. The fluff lacing is the last to appear. Rock Star is totally laced in the underfluff. Much more so than the one in the picture above. Max is too. But Rock Star I was going to cull several months ago because of his floppy comb. Some of you remember that. Julie (Bama) was one of the first to warn me not to. Max, when he was young, I thought he'd never lace up, but I kept him because I liked his type and he was my gentle giant. Now, his lacing is bold (green sheen everywhere) and his underfluff is laced. Not like Rock Star's but much better than I thought. I have a fence going up today and everyone is penned up. But when they finish, I see if I can get good pictures of their underfluff.
I gave to a friend, Eugene, you might have seen when I posted a picture of him making the front cover of our paper. Funny little town. Anyways, Eugene now has the boldest lacing in his hackles. Not one of the ones I kept do. I didn't keep him though, because as Julie said, type comes first. Eugene's back was a bit too long for my liking and his neck was too long. No sense in wondering if I could have bred him to a pullet with nice type and have corrected the offsprings type....
