I'll keep that in mind next time a raccoon or fox goes after my flock. Or even when a mouse goes after the feed pail.

You know what excessive means...overkill. I don't think any reasonable person would advocate use of more force than is needed to diffuse a situation. If the racoon can't be stopped by killing it, that is one thing. Hitting a bird with a deadly object because you don't want to get nipped is another. I have no doubt that this man used more force than he needed to with this animal. I doubt that his life was in danger from the goose, especially if he left the scene and returned to hit it. He could have called animal control. And if you read the story, he didn't admit what happend and lied and said that it had been hit by a car...That sounds like he knew he had done wrong. if it had been self defense and he had accidentally hurt it more than he meant to, why wouldn't he just tell them that? I think the truth is obvious.

Terrielacy, is the goose blind in both eyes?

And therein lies the rub. Having been in such a situation, without having actually witnessed this situation I cannot say with any degree of certainty that this occurred. I'm sure there are people reading this thread that are horrified at me snapping that rooster's neck and think it was overkill, and I know there are people out there who think my killing the dog was overkill. The P&P forum is full of people coming in to condemn us for defending our flocks with lethal force.

I'll be the first in line to condemn someone who just walks up and randomly starts whacking a goose with a baseball bat. But that doesn't appear to be what happened. The goose attacked him. Given that situation and my own experience with geese (and yes, I have had geese as pets before and I know that domestic geese can be sweet and friendly. This was NOT a domestic goose. A domestic cat can be sweet and friendly, a feral cat on the other hand...) I can see myself hitting a goose in the head with a bat to defend myself. Thus, since I don't know exactly what happened, I just can't agree with the round condemnations being sent in this man's directions.

And I do want to point out something.

You've stated that no reasonable person would advocate more use of force than is needed to diffuse a situation. So, out of curiosity, if you did have a few minutes alone with this man and had a baseball bat in your hand, you'd do, what, exactly?

A Canadian goose is not a helpless, defenseless, non-aggressive creature.

Please visit this link.

It shows a goose attacking. And attacking. And coming back and attacking. And attacking. There are many similar videos beside this one.

Can you show me where the man set out with the precise intention of this being the end result?

Frankly, if I hit a goose in the head with a baseball bat, my intent would be to kill it. I think it likely that is what the man intended as well. Depending on if he knocked it unconscious when he did so, he may well have assumed it was dead.

Because he didn't want to have a bunch of animal lovers screaming at him and he was worried that the goose was protected by law and thus even though he was defending himself he would be in legal hot water?

What's the saying?

Shoot, shovel, shut up?

And when the investigation is completed, if it is shown that his intent was revenge and to cause the goose pain, I'll happily join in the condemnation. This has yet to be shown.

I think another saying is

Take your lumps. You do the crime you do the time.

With that I am bowing out of this conversation before I lose my position here.

So.... the goose attacked a person, and thus deserves to be hit in the eye?

Or were you talking about the person who got attacked?

I know you have pet geese that you love, and I think that's coloring your viewpoint a little.
