Goose limping

Hello. It turns out Lucy’s toe was both dislocated and infected unfortunately so she had to get it amputated back in March. All seemed to be going well after the amputation and Lucy adapted perfectly however here we are a few months later and the leg that had the surgery is both hot and swollen. Her other leg also heats up from time to time. I brought her back to the vet to see what was going on last week and the bone infection is back. Our vet however says that there is no point starting treatment as the antibiotics didn’t work before the surgery. Is there anything I can do or do you think we should try antibiotics. I don’t want to just let her die as she is a loved pet goose. Before the surgery Lucy was on Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid 875/125mg 1/2 a tablet every 12 hours for a long time so I think that the only reason it isn’t working is because she has built up a resistance to this specific antibiotic. Could this be the case?? We had the infection tested before the surgery to see what antibiotic would work best and this was the one that the test said was best. The test also showed that the infection was staph. Basically I was just wondering what would be the next best antibiotic for a staph infection and if there is anything else I can do to help like a topical antibiotic, antibiotic or vitamins in her water or anything else that could possible help Lucy fight off this infection. Thank you so much for your help. Also it doesn’t matter if you have to get any of this stuff from a vet.

Other than soaking in warm Epsom salt water I really don't know of anything that can help and if it's staph and inside I doubt ES would help. We have a few members who have some knowledge on meds so maybe they will reply. I sure hope you can find something to help Lucy.

Thanks for your help. I will ask my vet about those antibiotics first thing. Does the amikacin antibiotic only come in injections. I don’t know how to give an injection to a goose. Do you? I have also read about natural antibiotics like garlic, manuka honey and essential oils like eucalyptus and tee tree for staph infections. Could I use those alongside the medications. Also should I give her probiotics now during her course of antibiotics or after. Is it okay to give geese yogurt??

My geese won't eat yogurt but you can buy powdered bird probiotics you just put into their water.

Your vet will hopefully give the injection and teach you how. As for natural antibiotics like you mentioned I am not sure if they would penetrate into the blood stream to fight this staph. But of course I would try anything if I thought it would help. I'd read up and make sure all those you mentioned were safe for birds. I know Manuka honey is. It's used for treating wounds.

I looked everywhere for powdered bird probiotics and couldn’t find any. I did however find powdered children’s probiotics. Will these work?

Yes I asked the vet and she said that we should try a higher dose of Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid 500/125mg twice a day for seven days so I have started her on this now. The vet is set on giving her this antibiotic because it is what the test said would work best so I don’t know what to do?? Any suggestions

I also have a liquid antibiotic that I could give Lucy in her water however I have been hesitant to what dose I could give her along with the tablets.

One final question, would it be safe to give her these vitamins in her water just to give her body a boost to fight off the infection by herself. It says that it is for chickens. Thanks for all your help
