Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

Is this the "official" hatching thread of 2014? I haven't been on BYC much lately, so I'm very behind.

I have a question for those of you that let your geese (specifically Sebs) hatch their own eggs. While I was on vacation, my mom was too intimidated (she's afraid of birds) to take the eggs from one of my Seb girls, so she's sitting on a nest of five eggs. I've never let any of my geese hatch their own eggs before. Is it safe to let her mate stay in with her? These two were pretty accepting when I introduced them to my American goslings last spring, so I'm leaning towards letting dad stay with her. What do you think?

Sorry, MLyd, I posted in response to the other post of yours, but didn´t see that Missy is Messing. What a shame! Maybe she doesn´t have enough of a 'maternal' instinct? Any ducks gone broody hyet? I have two here...one on just 2 eggs that I left her and the other on feet! Shame she can´t hatch out Missy´s eggs for her. I can´t imagine the eggs are any good if she´s not sitting on the at night......Can you candle any to see if there´s life in any of them?

She was out most of the morning and early afternoon, then she goes in and sits again. she is fickle to say the least. the egg I cracked this morning #18 I believe was fertile livin, I could see vein when I opened it up. For the life of me I don't know how though she has been so sporadic. I have 3 broody ducks. but I won't give them Missy eggs to hatch and then take them away, just can't do it. They are all 3 sitting on fake ceramic goose eggs. No room for ducklings this year. I need a barn. lol

Oh, Oh, oh, oh, oh......well you can always leave a couple with each duck...you´ve done it before! What are waitin' for???
Pop the latest few that you know haven´t been brooded yet, under a duck, collect the next few eggs, put them under another duck......3 under one, 3 under another, etc... Leave them 2 babies each, and you get some! Easy!

It will be more than fine. Daddy will not only leave mommy alone, he'll protect her and the eggs and gosling - even from you!

About 45 minutes ago a small hawk tried for my chickens!
I was sitting in the grass in the shade of my tree, Jasper, Snow and the chickens all around me. Some where in the shade right next to me, others in the sun basking or chasing bugs, when the chickens panicked. I sttod up to see what was up, and a hawk flew right past me! Thankfully it missed. I can only imagine that because I was in shade, wearing a black T-shirt, and typing a post on a chicken thread, maybe the hawk didn't see me till I stood up?

So I think I accidentally saved my birds today.

good for you, I wasn't there the day a red tail got my bantam hen, pretty sad day.

I make time for them to free range everyday right now because of how small they are. But as they mature they need more outside time than I can supervise. Which means they will be alone sometimes. I can only hope that since the hawk was small, the birds will be too big a target once full grown.

Five eggs in the incubator and a broody goose about 14 days in. Not bad for a yearling! She is the one that adopted goslings when she was 6 weeks old. She played the part of mother well then. She seems to be doing a fine job now. Never off the nest more than 15 minutes. That was on a day that was almost 80.

Almost 80 in Northern Indiana? wow... look forward to seeing those goslings..

Yesterday it got up to 79! then cold front came through. Today only low 50's. I hope for some goslings as well!
