Goslings of 2014 Hatch-a-long

She's had as many as 16 and down to 8 which is what she has now.
Weird to say the least. I can´t remember if you answeered this, MLyd, but how many did she have in her nest last year when she went broody? maybe she´s just the equivalent of a red Star or Isa chicken!

Serv, I read that it was probably the huge numbers of tulas that were taken to E Europe that contributed to the Steinbachers, so I would be surprised if an african had been used, it´d be too big anyway, seeing as the Steinbacher is a lighter breed. So probably Chinese is the way to go. What fun!

Quoting my book: "Erhlein, a Steinbacher breeder from the former East Germany, also reported that, even now, crosses between knobbed geese and Pomeranians, Diepholz or Czech geese will produce first-generation progeny strongly reminiscent of the Steinbacher."

Seems very fitting.

Does he have any goosey friends due? Lucy isn't showing signs of being a very nice goose. She's getting very bitey with her puppy play mate who puts up with a lot from her. She doesn't like water or lettuce! (Is it even a goose?!) She will be getting a name change to Christmas dinner if this is a sign of things to come!

No geese due until the 19th and 21st. But more turkeys and ducks are at day 28 tomorrow. We've been having a terrible time this year with the incubator. Last year was our first and we were getting in the 90-100 percent hatch rate. But we bought eggs from people. This is our first year with our own adult birds and I guess the fertility is just not there. So it's a bit disappointing, at best. But fingers crossed!

On the upside, we've had more demand than we can hatch, so selling the babies has not been a problem. I was just hoping to at least break even on some investments into the birds this year. Like I always say, Never look at a farmer's ledger anytime before the middle of summer. It's likely to be depressing.

8,

Well I guess that's a good thing. Can't ask for better than one of each to start with. Know any good 'witchy' names?

The best witchy name I can think of is "Maleficent." It just screams pure evil. Of course, my goats are mostly named after gods of destruction or things of the underworld: Loki, Shivanu, and now our little girl Valkyrie. We also have an Isis and an Astrid (Norse for 'god beautiful') - both girls.
