I do wish I could save them all, but harsh reality says I can't. We have a horrible stray dog problem here, they are very aggressive and some have mange so bad they are hairless. Tried calling animal control, they won't do squat and I don't have the resources or knowledge to do anything for them. I have been attacked by those dogs, I have scars on my arms to prove it, and so has a 15 year old boy. In addition those dogs broke into yards and ripped Thr front leg off a full grown German shepard, and ripped a weenie dog to pieces, they also killed a female Shepard/husky mix that got loose from her yard. My policy with those dogs is shoot to kill if they set 1 paw on my property. I feel it's the most humane thing I can do, put them out of their misery and remove a danger from our neighborhood. People like to dump their dogs at the gas station, not realizing that the stray packs with most likely kill them. If its a puppy or very friendly I will catch them, de-flea and tick them and try to find them a home. I found 3 homes and 1 I had to send to a shelter, but that's better than road kill or torn apart.
The cats are easier, I work with a rescue group who only charges me $20 a cat for shots and spay/neuter. I trap, deliver, pick up and release. And this is for my benefit, the cats will defend their territory from new cats, keeping the population stable, and prevents a pregnancies. Cats can have kittens every 4 months! I have rescued and rehomed 9 kittens, and rescued and kept 7 for myself (1 is my daughter who is leaving for college so I only have 6 with me now). All my cats are female and spayed. Also, did you know Tom cats will umm, force a female to mate, even after she been spayed? It happened to my outside calico, she came to me crying and some of her girl parts were hanging outside her body! I rushed her to the vet and she is fine now. But the trapping of cats benefits me, and the cats I get so I do it.
