got a bee bee gun

Here's my 2 cents worth...
I've had to deal with goat/chicken/rabbit etc. killing dogs for many years. What I've learned is that having a good high, tight, strong fence is the best protection. On another post I talked about weaving 6 ft long salt cedar or willow sticks (every 4" or so) vertically into an otherwise flimsy wire fence to make it dog & coyote resistant. Then lay some scrounged fence wire on the ground outside your fence, attach it with hog rings or wire to your existing fence. Then shovel some dirt over it to hide it. Now dogs can't dig under your fence.

When it comes to shooting dogs there are some serious issues to consider.

First is safety. If you shoot a gun at something the bullet, pellet, bb, shotgun pellets, paintball, etc could keep right on going and hit somebody or something you don't want to hit. Don't shoot at a dog that has anything you don't want to hit behind or beyond it. Also keeping a gun around the house is a huge responsibility, especially if you have kids. Think about this several times before you get a gun. How will you keep it stored so kids can't get to it? Are you within city limits, where it may be illegal to shoot a gun except for self defence?

Second is how shooting dogs will affect your relationship with your neighbors. They may take revenge on you if they know you shot their dog. You may be justified, but it could still cause trouble.

But it sounds like you already have trouble. Dogs killing your animals and neighbors not willing to take responsibility for the dogs puts you in a position where you either have to give up and leave, give up on having animals, or defend yourself and yours. My choice is option 3. What I would do is buy two guns and get serious about learning to use them safely and effectively. The first would be a .22 rifle (I recommend a Ruger 10/22). With that you can defend yourself and your animals effectively. It's accurate and will certainly kill dogs (tho not quickly) and you can use if for home and self defence if necessary. It has no recoil, isn't loud, and ammo is cheap so you can learn to use it without going broke. But I would only use it as a last resort. The second gun would be a decent pellet rifle (and that may be what you already have). With that you can sting dogs' butts out to 50 yards, and do it quietly. Once a dog has had his butt stung he will probably avoid your place in the future. It's true that the pellets may penetrate the skin and cause infection. Then the owner will have to take him to the vet and spend a bunch of money having the pellet removed, antibiotics, etc. After that the owner will probably see that keeping his dogs home is in his best interests. An alternative would be a paintball gun, which won't do any serious damage, and hurts like heck. But they aren't very accurate beyond 20 yards or so.

Once you've taken care of your fence and if you decide to arm yourself and start defending yourself and your animals, I would just shut up about it. Don't draw attention to yourself by calling the cops, complaining to the neighbors, etc. Just pop any tresspassing dogs in the butt with the pellet rifle, and shoot any killers with the .22. The place to shoot them is right behind the shoulder, thru the ribs, into the lungs and heart. It's a bad, and sad, thing to have to do, and I hope you can avoid doing it.

dont have kids. have never been into guns. was raised with them, though. not a light decision i'm going into easily. not city limits. etc.

the guy at teh store said that the round ones are only good if the dogs haven't actually attacked. once htey have, it needs to harm them to do anything at all. he had apparently dealt with his share of crying middle aged animal lovers befroe and knew the drill.

i don't belive there is a right way or wrong way to do this. everyway will suck for someone. in fact, they all suck for me as i care about my neighbors dogs, owned or unowned, mroe than they do.

but if i wind up with something dead or horribly maimed on my hands, it needs to be their animal and not mine.

unforutantely, people around here can't afford to use vets. some might if they could, most woulnd't. the dog i took in suffocating from the field recnetly had, i counted them, eight hundred plus ticks on her, inclding on the eyes. i had to mop my floor three times from all the blood they had in them. not joking. this dog belonged to the "wealthy" family in the neighborhood. seriously. i tended her and today found her a place to go be in training as a guide dog for a blind child.

so you can see while i'm thinking of shooting and killing or permenatly maiming or whatever some dogs, i am also trying to do the opposite with the harmless ones. i suppose i am a complex person in a complex situation. i appreciate the people who seem to get that and don't just send forth trite answers.

wish i did have flimsy fence then could jsut fix it. have good strong solid chain link fence which doesn't have any slack at all. they are coming here because of the goats. others have fences i could blow down with asthma and no problem.

they are probably starving, some of them, others just out for a hoot. i can't leave any dog or cat food out for my own, even for five minutes as it will draw animals. i feed my cat on top of my car.

anyway.

partially rambling, partially responding to yalls coments. just in an icky situation.

thaks for you interest and feedback.

i will think more about all of your options.

If you have the money for a gun, it may be cheaper to put up electric fence. I have it for my horses, but years ago I had a JRTerrier who loved to dig under the fence, and I ran the wire along the bottom of the fence about 6 inches above the ground. She hit it, and that was the end of the holes.

Hey, Picklespickles ... what kind of BB gun did you get. They are not all created equal. Some of the lower powered children guns should be fairly harmless if you limit your shots to non-sensitive areas of the predator and make for a good tool for teach lessons. Head shot could cause critical damage, so those should be avoid if you just trying to teach the predator a lesson.

For instance, I use a rifle that requires 10 pumps to produce fully power. So, I use it on 2-3 pumps to sting a potential predator. The only drawback is this limits my accuracy at long distances. Increasing the velocity by pumping more defeats my purpose of warning of the predator because it’s very likely that predator may suffer for a long time from wound I caused. But, often even with the low velocity shot that misses, there is sufficient warning for predators that are easily scared off. The bobcat on the other hand needed a little more convincing …

I have to agree with Texaschicknrancher. Get a paintball gun. Causes a good amount of pain, bruising without much chance for infection unlike BBs or pellets. If you really want to inflict pain on them freeze the paintballs. It won't kill unless you get a head shot in the right place. The really nice thing for you about paint ball guns is you can see the balls flying through the air and where they land. Even if you are a horrible shot you can correct and eventually hit them. BBs and Pellets aren't like that. You can also inject pepper spray or whatever you like into the paint balls. Another good feature is they keep shooting as long as you have CO2 and ammo unlike most BBs or Pellets which you must reload or worse pump up. Most paint simply washes off, they are non toxic (At least here in So Cal).

NEVER shoot a person with a frozen paintball!

BB and Pellet guns are horrible. If you intend to do that much damage get a small 22 rifle.

I have repeat air pellet gun, shoots 12 shots in a row. Looks just liek a shot gun, its very nice. I had to shoot at a cat this weekend, who ate one of my chickens about 2 weeks ago. I didnt aim for it, I dont really want to kill it, but just shot in its direction...hopefully scared the piss out of it. When I came home from running errands all day the lilttle...was sitting on a piece of concrete near my fence just giving its slef a bath. Hes quite honery! Like lots of you, I dont want to kill, but I cant have this happening, even when I have a 6foot privacy fence.
