Gotta have treats!

I think that's an awesome idea. Like a birdie popsicle but healthy at the same time I will have to try that. Another good summer treat I was told is any of the melons because they have so much water in them. It hydrates the birds while they are eating it so it's a double shot of goodness.

My babies are still only 3 weeks and I have to say some of the things that I put in the give me weird looks for. I am hoping that they are just still young and it might take them a while to get used to new foods but who knows maybe they are hatched with what they like already in their head. It will be interesting finding out.

I would say u have to take each treat into consideration as to how big it should be. They don't have teeth and use their grit to grind it up...so I would think most things would have to be pretty small for them to b able to swallow easily, store inn their crop, and grind it out. I would think tomatoes should be chopped into smaller pieces.

I'm still confused about the grit thing - I know they need it to digest food but still not sure which foods are safe before they have grit. My chicks are 1 wk tomorrow. I have only given them egg yolk - they love it!! Is it ok to give the white as well? I have some banana that is over ripe for my liking so can I try giving them some? Thanks guys!! I read the food link but that seems like what is safe for adults - not real sure about when it safe for the kidlings

Since they r only a week old, only soft things like egg (the whole egg is safe - well not the shell at this point) and yogurt and mushed banana. U can start giving them grit now so that u don't have to play the game about what food they do need grit for!

At 2 weeks old we gave them a red frisbee with construction type sand in it (it's a little courser) and they ate it and took dust baths in it. We keep the frisbee in their and put more sand in as needed. They will eat the sand...so don't get scared. It's ok. After letting them have the sand for a few days we atrted introducing new treats, like crickets. Lots of people feed mealworms (not the dried ones yet beause they r too hard). Just remember not to introduce too many treats at once and make sure they r still eating their crumbles. Another treat mine like is their crumbles with water in it! I put it in a trough feeder for them and they go crazy for it! Good luck...hope that helps...let us know if u have any more ??'s!

make sure you limit the treats when they are really young tho...thats what I was told here!

My chicks; boy they are spoiled; my dog is like WTHeck; I dont even get leftovers (he doesnt either..he gets dog food; thats IT)...

I gave them the chicken carcass yesterday, some corn, some potatoes, some strawberries that were too mushy to eat; a banan that was covered in ants (grrr ants)...

they LOOOVED it...the picked the chicken CLEAN..its just kinda uh..wrong..

I have parakeets and I offer my chicks grit for the parakeets. I give them a small dish right when I get them home. I used to sprinkle it on the food but put it separate now as sometiems they don`t finish all their treat and I have to throw it out.

I scramble eggs every other morning for my birds and have so far given seedless grapes, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, feta cheese, cottage cheese (mix in the egg sometimes) watermelon, chopped spinach, spaghetti w/sauce, liverwurst and oatmeal.

By far scrambled egg seems to be the number one treat.

I also found the earlier you start treats the less likely they look at it funny before trying it

I spend more time preparing meals for my animals than I do making a holiday meal when the family shows up...ha ha

although it's May and we're in the south, it got down in the 50's so I tried some hot cereal with grated apple and powdered milk in it today to warm them up. I don't know what was funnier - them going around with cereal beards ( it came out reallllly sticky) or the fact that when they tried to eat it off each other's faces it looked like they were kissing!

they just can't stand messy faces!

wondering - is peanut butter okay? I was thinking spreadin it on toast or old rice cakes and sprinkling oats or seeds on it...
