They figured out the corn on the cob when I took the kernels off for them. It was like 20 little light bulbs going off saying oh we can eat that lol.

We gave them watermelon tonight and they enjoyed the water in the bottom of the container from the watermelon more than the fruit itself.

We just had spaghetti tonight though so the birdies will get some leftovers tomorrow. Can't wait.

My girlies were acting like idiots today...flying around in the brooder and doing the chest bumps and all.

So I decided I need to intervene. I got a tin pie plate out and put it in the brooder.

So funny watching her peck the tin and make tons of noise and the other girlies running around squawking! I threw a grass clump in and they ate the grass off it. Tonight I gave them some oats. I had the barred rock, Sweet Pea, outside with me for a bit today. I walked around the side of the house and she couldn't see me. SHe started cheeping as loud as she could and when I walked around the corner, she saw me and stopped and half flew/ran over to me. So cute!

I live in Alabama, so grits will be on the menu as soon as the chicks are old enough.

I found this on another thread and am gonna have to try this!

"Well I found a way. I took 6 apples, punched a hole in the center of each one and pulled a rope through them all like a string of beads. I then took the peanut butter and spread it all over them in a thin coat. I then rolled them in a mixture of crumble and bird seed mix.
Took it out and tied it to the roof of the coop high enough for them to peck but not get on their feathers.
THEY LOVE IT.

I will not do this to often becouse of the salt content but for a treat and to play with"

What a cool idea it's like the pine cone peanut butter feeders we make in preschool but with chicken food not bird seed. Do they eat the apple too?

I saw citrus on the list of don't feed foods but am wondering why. I have a grapefruit and lemon tree where my future chickens will roam so i'm wondering if they will be a problem... As I think about it, I have seen squirrels nibble the grapefruit during droughts, but I have never seen a bird mess with one. Will the chickens figure out it is yukky? Anyone have citrus experience?

Not sure but I would be interested in the answer. I know they do like apples which we have growing around here but they aren't citrus.

I have pecan trees and last winter had baby chicks. After a few weeks I gave mine little pecan bits left over from shelling. They LOVED them. Today I can stop, crack a couple pecans and all of them come RUNNING. They love them pecans!! As adults, I just smash a few between some bricks as toss them over the fence. They really seem to like picking through the shells.

Watermelon is also a favorite around here.

With my new day olds I think I'll try some yogurt today. Glad to have some new fluffy ones to play with.
