Gotta have treats!

WOW!! I can't believe they didn't go crazy over the oats! Have u tried the black oil sunflower seeds (people call it BOSS on here)?? I got a bag of them the other day and mine r SO NOT interested in them, but other people swear by them. Tonight they r getting egg or yogurt. Haven't decided yet! LOL Me and DH worked on the run today and r both kinda pooped! When we were in town getting lumber forgot to get the babies crickets! Bad parents, I know.

They finally started to eat the baby cake treat we hung in there. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

I haven't tried BOSS yet that would be another good thing. Did you shell yours before giving them to your babies? I can't imagine that they would be able to crack the shells themselves.

No I didn't shell them...they seemed kinda softer then regular sunflower seeds. Now that u said that tho I'm gonna check them when we go downstairs to give them their treat!

Just read the link and went "uh-oh!" I had read it last year when we were thinking of getting chickens, but hadn't read it since, just read Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry, the chicken section of Barnyard in Your Backyard, and a bunch of chicken magazines. I had totally forgotten what it said about cat food, so when I read that people train show birds by offering a treat of high quality catfood, I thought it was just the thing! We had some shredded style that looked just like worms and they love it - now I am gonna have to take it off the menu

Maybe I'll be lucky and that methy-whatsywhosis stuff is only in the dry kind?

Well LilyD - i checked the BOSS and it is a soft sunflower seed. I think they eat the whole thing...that's y u can give it to them?? I will have to check more into that. DH made them a "Saturday Night Special" of eggs mashed up, mixed with some yogurt and oats. Put the food in and BACK AWAY b4 u loose a digit!

Wow they definitely like that. I will have to get some sunflower seeds to try. Not sure if my babies are a little two young though they won't be 3 weeks until Tuesday. They did pick at the oats a bit today but you could just tell that they weren't excited about it. They even went and ate their food rather than mobbing me for the treat. I was thinking about corn on the cob. Someone mentioned giving that to them and just letting them pick the Kernels off. That might be another cool treat to give them. My sisters chickens like squashes and watermelons. So many possibilities.

Well we bought some whole wheat spagetti pasta today and cooked some if it up. We haven't given it to them yet...but I am really excited for the show! Will let u know later how it went!

We have netting over the top of the brooder and so we just sprinkled the spagetti on top and every1 was jumping for it and some would knock it off and the ones who couldn't reach got some!

I tried corn on the cob today and once again I got a very cool response. They picked at it and thought it was interesting and climbed on it like a perch but didn't really eat much of it. Oh well back to the drawing board. Maybe tomorrow we will have spaghetti for dinner

I try to give mine something everyday. I dont think of it as a treat cause they dont free range. They are in a 216 sq ft run but it is all dirt. I have TONS of clover all over my property so I pick a bunch of that everyday and tear it up in the run.

So far their favorite thing is spinach, chopped egg and meal worms. They were not having the bananna. Today we tried tomato and they loved it. When I go to the store this week I will be getting them some plain yogurt.

I am also going to start giving them the left overs from the frozen veggies I cook in the evening. I dont always use fresh. So I was thinking, in the summer can I just give them a bag of frozen veggies for a cool summer heat treat? Like a veggie pop!

Also - they are 9 weeks old...do I still need to chop everything up tiny? The tomatos were kind of "chunked" and then seemed to stuggle with them a little.
