Granny's gone and done it again

I had a pen of 44 RIR pullets. I lost 2 or 3 one day right after they started laying well. I opened the coop door one morning and one of them just down and took two steps out the door and dropped dead. The others I found during the day. That was a one time event. I'm going out now to build a little quick small roost for a White Giant hen and rooster. The last of the batch. Pets til the are gone.

wow I'm sorry that you lost so much

My little girl almost 19 years ago. Still miss her. This is Daisy. We took her in from a family that got her for their kids but the young son grossly abused her. She didn't like anything green. Green carpet or green grass. She would go out into the middle of the street so she didn't touch the grass when she tinkled.

Same here. I only have about a dozen if that larger hens and the 4 medium sized roosters. The rest are bantams and bantam crosses. No more hatches. I had two chicks from the same hen who didn't live past 1 week so suspect birth defects from inbreeding. Won't bring any more in due to Marek's either. So I will enjoy the 40 or so I have until they are gone, then no more.

I went 6 years without a suspected Marek's death then have had two or three in the past year. I just freaking HATE that disease.

They gave him a pretty throw and a pair of PJ bottoms that will be too big for him but then he was donated a few pair. He will get another gift Tuesday from someone that has a loved one there. They bought for all
Wow that is so nice. Glad to hear people are being so giving

Nobody is forgotten. Residents without families are bought for by the employees or by the social dept where there is a fund for such things. We had a large Christmas party for the families and residents. Employees provided refreshments, home baked cookies, cakes, etc. Santa handed out gifts and employees helped distribute them. Everyone had a good time.

We always expected our diabetics to need a lot of insulin that day. They all wheeled back to their rooms with their laps loaded with loot and food with a cookie in their mouths but nobody fussed at them.

The one funny memory I have is the little old lady with Alzheimer's who came by the nurse's station trying to drink a bottle of fingernail polish. Not really funny but yeah, it was, especially the way we scrambled to intercept that bottle before she could do herself damage. Found out how fast two nurses in their 50s could move.

Never could understand why anyone would give a lady with Alzheimer's disease who didn't know her knee from her elbow a manicure set complete with polish remover and polish. It's like...duh.

They always appreciated pretty lap robes, afghans, warm sweaters, socks and the like along with new clothes and bedroom slippers as very few wore shoes.

Funny I've been thinking about the Christmas party where I used to work the last few days. Always a festive time that put you in the Christmas spirit.

Don't worry, @Granny Hatchet, they will spoil Tom rotten.

All the kids are on their roosts. We have a couple who still come to the front door looking for treats when they are out free ranging. They must associate free ranging with freeloading.
I miss that. Of course when mine were free ranging I was normally out there with them. A couple of them liked to nap on my lap and another I caught drinking my tea!
