That's a good idea. The first "whip" I was clean, but I was afraid it wasn't dead. So I did it several more times, and that's when things got messy.
I thought about it, but was afraid they wouldn't be sharp enough. I broke my best pair and need new ones.
Yea doing it several more times would have made things messy. Here's some other ideas.

Whip ? My hatchet wasnt sharp enough once when I was culling a big roo. I only got half way through. It was bleeding and would of died but not fast enough so I had to turn the hatchet around and I bashed his head in. I felt really bad for that so now Tom keeps a knife sharp for me and I slit the throat. the babies are easy to cut though.

I held its head in my hand (body dangling), squatted close the the ground, and whipped my wrist. I didn't hear a snap, so I did it a few more times. And I didn't stop there. The next part was the traumatic stuff. I don't really want to talk about it.

Just assure me that it was dead after the first one.

I have never done that. I know it is the old way. My wrist would not be that strong. the amish here use a stick and put their head under it, stand on it and pull the body. You will find something easy for you if you have to do it enough. Hoping you dont.

For the ones that I did I held the body in one hand and the head in my other. Make sure the neck is resting on your index finger (fore finger), then using your thumb and thumb nail press down on the back of the chicks neck. You'll feel it pop but that's it. No mess or anything like that. I wrapped mine up in a paper towel or wet wipe when I did them that way.

Just reminded me of something my mom did . Of course I got my nose in everything. She was going to clean a chicken for dinner and I followed her outside. Well she snatched that chicken up by the neck ,lifted her arm in the air and started swinging that chicken in circles while hanging on to the neck then sh did a quick flick with he wrist and threw it to the ground . We are standing there staring at it and she says thats how its done. The chicken made a noise that startled me and she explained how that was just reflexes. About that time that thing jumped up with its whole neck hanging down and started running in circles and squawking. Mom screamed, I screamed the chicken took off at a run and I never did see it again. LOL
