I really like the Seramas!  They come in all different colors, lay tiny little eggs, and go broody pretty regularly, so you can hatch out more if you want to.  The best part is the friendly personalities, and if you are getting them from a breeder/judge, they should have very good temperaments.  The downside is they fly really well, are hawk bait, and do need the heat in the winter.  Oh, one other great thing is they are so tiny, you can fit 4 or 5 in the space of one large chicken.  Doubt that you can make much money with them.  I don't know anyone who profits from their chickens except big hatcheries.  You could probably sell enough to cut your feed costs.

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better despite busting your butt today.  I have lots of padding on mine, so that's the best place to land when I tip over. :p   I have been so bummed this week because my 3 new pullets, that I drove 4 hours round trip to pick up, have come down with some respiratory problem.  Hopefully the rest of my birds won't get it.  The new ones were in my garage for a few days before I moved them up to my sister's, but I still could have spread the problem to my coops before I realized that there was a serious problem.  The breeder, who is very conscientious, didn't know he had sick birds until I told him about it.  He has culled and sent some off for testing, so I am anxiously waiting to find out what we're facing.  Think I'm going to have to cull the little ones, something I haven't had to do yet. :(   And I am a big wimp. :/

So sorry to hear about the respiratory problem. I sure hope it hasn't spread to your healthy chickens.

ya, i know about that respiratory crap . its aweful. I know i am not getting rich on chickens, i worded it wrong. off setting the cost of feed would suit me. seen a trio of bantam speckled sussex for sale for 30 would like to have them but i am stopped once again by no driving. this is very tiresome. everyone is thinning for winter and there is some really good deals out there. and i am missing them all. a woman has a houdan roo for sale not far from me for 20 dollars . looks like spazz except no gold, black and white mostly. i dont know if this is a good price or not. and i dont want to end up with a bunch of roos but he sure is pretty. still cant find a jg hen. i just want a really big hen. abnormally big. i havent seen any lf cochins either. the bantams make good mamas im not sure about the lf. wonder how many serema eggs i could get under a lf cochin?

Probably about 30!

The chicks are tiny. I've always worried about the chicks getting crushed.

Happy to hear the Dr's visit went well. Sorry you busted your rear and hurt your toe. That must be painful. I also have fibromyalgia and my rheumatologist prescribes diclofenac potassium. It's like aleve but with potassium instead of sodium for heart issues. Helps quite a bit. I bet you could get a BUNCH of serama eggs under a cochin. LOL My favorite of my flock is a cochin/SLW mix. She has the markings of the SLW but weighs in at just under10 lbs and has the cochin feathering though not as much on legs/feet as full cochin. First time my bantam EE went broody, I was gone for almost a month (road trip with my older brother and SIL) - so hubby and a friend who was staying with us were taking care of my girls. I came home to find poor little Lucile down to nothing sitting on eggs that were almost a month old. Hubby has since learned a few things. I felt so sorry for her I bought 2 day old chicks for her and took the eggs out late that night and put chicks under her. Everything went so well, I was so proud of myself! Next morning when I opened the coop I was excited to see the new "family" but to my dismay Lucile came barreling out of the coop and proceeded to eat everything she could and her babies were left on the floor of the coop. I was left to be mama. The only reason I bought those two chicks was because the lady I got them from had the roo and he was absolutely drop dead gorgeous! A big handsome, pure white Cochin. She didn't know which chick came from which mother but the three hens were a SLW, GLW and an EE. I picked the one with green legs since I figured EE and the other one, the tiniest one was so ugly I took her out of pity. The fuzz around her face was the color of mildew, a sickly green/black and the other chicks seemed to pick on her. I named her Greenie! She is my 10 lb beauty but still thinks she should be hand fed. Every day. Her half sister's legs were the prettiest green so she became Olive. I have no clue as to what her genetics are because her feathers are a rich metallic copper - much brighter than a typical GLW but patterened similarly, green legs that I thought were EE, but she has a large single floppy comb??? I only have 6 now; had 7 but lost one of my BA's to what I figured out too late was worms.

can you do pics. mrsc ? I am dying to get outside. i heard the white leghorn i just got is limping and no one will catch him and bring him in so i can give him the once over. i never realized how many people are afraid of chickens. lol i dont understand why either. some people will stop eating chicken and eggs after they see a baby hatch. hahaaa tell me, for those of you that are truly addicted to hatching. when you start to cook breakfast and you have to break an egg, do you wonder what he would of looked like? do you think, i just murdered a chicken? LOL

I've tried to do pics a couple of times with no results and tons of frustration. Guess my patience doesn't extend to electronics. LOL. I live in the city and can' have a rooster or else I would have brought home that beautiful cochin! Over two years later and I still think he was about he prettiest chicken I have ever seen. I will try again with pictures. All of my girls are easy to catch except the little bantam. She will eat out of my hand but won't get on my lap or let me pick her up. Every time she goes broody, I make sure to pet her as much as possible before I take the eggs away.LOL I just want her to know that I would never hurt her. If I lived closer, I'd catch your rooster for you. I'm always surprised by the number of folks that are afraid of chickens and other birds too.

i cant do pics either. i gave up. someone puts them on here for me well on my files and i can get them from there to here.i also lived in FL. for a few. only place i know where you can outrun the rain. what is fibromyalgia?is that where someone pokes you and you say OUCH ?i have had a few nurses ask me lately if i had that and one dr/ too.my daughter has that and she said its from vit. d being low. i dont know anything about it. I do seem to have a lot of pain.

That's exactly what I think when I crack my silkie eggs, it bothers me so much I try to give those away. I feel much better eating my big girl eggs that aren't firtle.
I thought you weren't suppose to get more chickens? I think you losing control Granny.

suzierd, i am way past losing control. i dont have any sick chickens in the coop. i am just bored sick. i think like that some but its not any certain kind.with all the talk i have done i only have 4 new ones. the leghorn pair and the egyption fayoumis pair

Lol, you and me both Granny. I have to bury a baby chick this morning because its mother attacked it after it was hatched and I brought it in tried to save it. She will never get to hatch eggs again. I feel terrible because I gave her another chance I felt the first chick to attacked she did it because it hatched under another hen. The first two chicks she hatched by herself she raised just fine. After she hurt it and I took it away from her she was calling for it, crazy chicken.
I sure hope your respitory issue is gone, that would be great! I guess your find out if their carriers if these new ones get sick. Hope and pray they didn't! And I hope the one that's limping is fine today. Have a good day!
